jazzytakara
I'm doing a research assignment on the sexualization of the media (both entertainment and news); however, I am having difficulty finding sources that have not already been influenced by this media trend. I want to try to control my more conservative bias, but at the same time I want to talk about the issues that come from having highly sexual content in media sources (news, television, movies, books, etc.). I am trying to show how it effects men and women, distorts healthy sexuality, objectifies men and women, provides an unrealistic example, etc. I am looking for both secular and religious sources. Most sources are saying the media needs to either show more to encourage sexuality and stop shaming those who want to be sexually adventurous'. The scary thing is I am using university approved databases which only provide academic journals. Anyway, if anyone knows of some better source material or has an opinion they would like to share (trying to gauge public opinion), please post it in this thread. I know that this may cause debate, as people have a different idea as to what is too much and what is too little when it comes to media content, so I thought it best to post it on the Debate Table, if this is the wrong place for this, feel free to move it to the proper section. Thank you!
Nihil Obstat
Have you been looking into clinical psychology papers which may study different factors associated with sexual disorders or emotional trauma?
jazzytakara
I haven't yet, I've started my research looking into the communication and media side of it. So media effects theories, and journals that focus on research into the increased sexual content on the internet. So far a lot of the papers that came up on a communication database are on the side of increased sexuality. They state there are effects, but the only negative effects are those that demonize free sexual exploration with no regard for consequence. Do you know of where I can find legitimate clinical psychology papers? Since its a university project we are encouraged to find academic papers rather than lay papers and theories. We can use them, but the main support for our research cannot be centered around lay theories.

If your university has a good psychology department, maybe the department head could get you in touch with some professors who know the subject material. I do know a clinical psychologist PhD, and I believe that she has some experience with sexual offenders specifically, but her publications all deal with clinical psychology related to elderly patients and their long term care. And also depression in middle age and older Chinese immigrants. I guess if I were you my approach would be talking to some people in the psych faculty, as well as combing through academic psychology databases with proper keywords. I'm a psych major and for half my research I use Google Scholar because it's so much more user-friendly than databases.
Autumn Dusk
You may want to get in touch with the people who run "protecting God's children" they have the stats on offenders....something like 95% of offenders had veiwed graphic porn and something like 99.9% had been exposed to sexual images as a child...I don't know what % is videos. Not all viewers become offenders, but all offenders were viewers.
MissScripture
I don't know if this website will be useful, but this is what I used for most of my research when I was in grad school: http://highwire.stanford.edu/
