jazzytakara
I was reading this today, I'm not sure of the validity of any news source about what is going on in the Vatican at the moment, but an interesting notion to consider. Does anyone think it is necessary to ensure that the next pope swear lifelong service? Or should it be the decision of the individual chosen how long he should serve? http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/441650/20130304/papal-conclave-2013-cardinals-ready-work-will.htm#.UTV4XTBQEuc Edited March 5, 2013 by jazzytakara

Nihil Obstat
I was reading this today, I'm not sure of the validity of any news source about what is going on in the Vatican at the moment, but an interesting notion to consider. Does anyone think it is necessary to ensure that the next pope swear lifelong service? And canonically speaking it would be very odd, straying into potentially illegal from a canon law perspective. I hope we do not hear much more of this "an anonymous cardinal was quoted as saying..." junk. It is a way to attempt to influence the conclave without being perceived as doing so. Slappo
Anything the Cardinal's might put in place before the election to specify what the Pope must do could be rescinded by the Pope the day he took office. It is not a democracy, although voting for a pope might appear to some as being democratic.
Luigi
Cardinals can't make the Pope do anything. And it sometimes appears that the Pope can't make cardinals do anything, either.
GeorgiiMichael
I'm rather skeptical of this article. It has shoddy (alright, no) sourcing for it's more radical claims.
Lilllabettt
I think its something they are probably considering. I personally wonder if when Papa Emeritus was elected he did not already have in mind the idea that he would eventually resign. I think it would be wise this time to choose someone who only has reigning 'till death in mind.
