Debra Little
I look forward to an ultra-conservative Pope being elected and then declaring that women can never be Priests, abortion can never be okay, contraception is always evil, and homosexual acts are never moral. I predict that the look on the media's face will spring forth five years of hysterical memes. yes!
Slappo
JPII couldn't have made Bl. Teresa of Calcutta a cardinal without altering Canon Law. I really do highly doubt that he asked her to be a cardinal and that she declined. Even if that did take place, maybe it is just a sign from God saying "see even Bl. Teresa of Calcutta knew better than to attempt to be the first woman cardinal."

Evangetholic
If you lived in Quedlinburg, Germany (among other places) anytime before the Reformation for most practical purposes your "ordinary" was a woman. The same situation continued in parts of Western Europe until the political activities of Napoleon Bonaparte at the start of the 19th century. This current moment in Church History is actually a strange one as far as women exercising practical authority over the affairs of the Church, especially the local Church. All animals are equal. Some are just more equal than others. Oh, come on. You're an intelligent person. You know the theology behind ordination and you know the Church doesn't poo-poo on women. You don't have to agree with it, but don't pass it off as utterly simplistic.
Evangetholic
Women cannot be priests. It's an impossibility. It's like men being mothers. Women can be presidents, queens, doctors, lawyers, theologians, generals (idc if you don't like it), but they simply may not be priests. The Church will never ordain women, but if woman's general emancipation persists Holy Church will have to find a way, within the structure, to hear from Her daughters. This isn't liberal fantasism, it's just simply the facts of the matter.

All animals are equal. Some are just more equal than others. Seriously Hassan....quoting orwell over a tradition that's 2000 years old is a bit highschoolish...you can argue better than that. to add: I do know that the theoretical example I gave was way off the rocker. On a more serious note: I'm very highly skeptical of changing the traditions of the Church (small t) without due reason. The coolness of a female cardinal doesn't seem like due reason to me. To an extent I'm bothered by the abdication of the papacy as it is not within the traditions of the Church for a pope to serve for less than his entire life. The red shoes symbolize giving up ones entire life down to his blood being spilt in service to the Church. Not only that but Cardinals are very important at ordinations and a confirmation here or there, as well as celebrating Mass and concelebrating it with other priests. Very important tradition indeed. Basilisa Marie
I agree that even floating the possibility too strongly would contribute towards re-igniting a women priests debate which would do no good for anybody. Re-igniting? Ha.
Nihil Obstat
Re-igniting? Ha. As I understand it, the debate was much worse in the time leading up to Ordinatio sacerdotalis.
Evangetholic
I change my opinion (not the opinion of its possibility, but I could no longer be considered a booster). Why? I think that the Mother Teresas will decline the red and the Joan Chittisters would accept. Pro Ecclesia, contra mundum Plus Old Wine skins and all that.
