Gabriela
That's not voting, right? Is it just the cardinals getting together to decide on a date to vote and to handle other Vatican business? Also: Is there some way that I can get automatic updates on the progress toward electing a new pope? I don't read the news and I don't want to have to go expose myself to all the crap on news webpages just to see if anything's happened at the Vatican yet. I also don't have a cell phone, am not on Facebook, and the Vatican twitter feed just isn't cutting it. If it's all turning up here on PM, it's buried somewhere deep on the 50th page of one of the 25 pope threads... There must be some way a non-techy person can be alerted to news like this in almost-real time. I'm at my computer about 18 hours a day, but I want the news to come to me. Ideas? Or can we just start a thread that is strictly limited to updates on the status of the elections (with explanations of what things like "General Congregation" actually mean), with no nonsense or discussion posts allowed? I just want the news, for crying out loud!

Era Might
You can set up google news alerts based on keywords (e.g., "conclave") and it will email you news as soon as it appears. Edited March 2, 2013 by Era Might
Gabriela
You can set up google news alerts based on keywords (e.g., "conclave") and it will email you news as soon as it appears. How do I do that, and what would be a good word to use? Ideally it'd eliminate all the annoying speculation and just send me actual event updates. Is that possible? Michael Voris. Your mom. No, it's not like a manually created news update, it alerts you to any new stories with the keyword. Sounds like you're looking for a sort of live blogging of the election...I imagine some news source will have something like that once the conclave starts, not sure about now. Nihil Obstat
If you are still confused about the purpose of the meetings: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/cardinals-set-date-for-meetings-about-next-pope/ Home » News » Vatican Cardinals set date for meetings about next Pope By David Uebbing Vatican City, Mar 1, 2013 / 05:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On the first day that the Church is without a Pope, Cardinal Angelo Sodano announced that the first general congregation of cardinals will take place next Monday morning. Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, made the date public in an official letter sent to the world’s cardinal on March 1. The cardinals will meet from 9:30 to 12:30 on the morning of March 4 in the Synod of Bishops hall on the second floor of the Paul VI audience hall. They will convene again from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the same place. Prior to entering into the Conclave where they vote for the next Pope, the cardinals of the Church will meet for a series of meetings to take care of business and to discuss who they think will be a good candidate to succeed Pope Benedict. The cardinals could announce when the conclave will begin after their first meeting, but there is no guarantee of the timing.

Nihil Obstat
Sounds like they set a meeting about setting a meeting. Seems pretty hasty. They probably should have talked about it in a meeting first.
