Habemus Papam...already!

Well, maybe not the Papam you were looking for.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has elected Abune Matthias as its new patriarch, replacing Abune Paulos, who died of an undisclosed illness last August after leading the church since 1992.

(‘Abune’ means ‘Our Father’ in the Ethiopian language.)

...

Ethiopia is home to one of the oldest Christian churches in the world -- almost two-thirds (63 percent) of the country’s population is Christian, with most of them -- between 40-million and 45-million -- belonging to the Orthodox branch, which is officially known as Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Would it be "Habemus Patriarcham"? I'm just speculating on the Latin.

I don't believe the Ethiopians would actually use the term "Papam" to describe their patriarch since that title is held by the See of St. Mark (Alexandria).

The latin grammaratically and Translation wise is incorrect. Patriach derives from Papa which means father. Papam is the Dative form of this noun.

That is also true in the Greek language.

Ooooh, we're talking Latin, now?  I know Latin!  I do! I do!  I do!

Ahem, "Yo Quiero Taco Bell?"

See?  I'm a genius.
