OnlySunshine
Burke is my number one choice. L'AMERIQUE!! Stranger things have happened! Cardinal Burke, in my opinion, would be a good fit since he loves the Latin Mass and would keep tradition going and he would also encourage young people to return to the Church. :) Edited March 1, 2013 by MaterMisericordiae

OnlySunshine
I can't imagine an American Pope...too much press drama, I imagine. I think it'd be really good for America. An American Pope would understand the troubles we face here. I wouldn't want just ANY American as Pope but someone strong could do a really good job -- like Cardinal Burke. :)

r2Dtoo
Wait until the media gets their hands on it. The media regularly attacks the Catholic Church on two things: the Pope's wealth (which he would still have even if he came from the poorest country in the world), and sex scandals. Those are flashy, pretty little things that sound great at the water cooler, but his nationality? Who cares? Seriously, this is the first time I've heard anyone say an American couldn't be Pope for media reasons. If that's the real issue then that is entirely a construct within Catholic minds. The Cardinals care, seeing as the Pope was almost always an Italian. This recent "let's select someone from outside Italy" thing is still only two Popes old. Nationality DOES matter, along with a whole bunch of other stuff...the Cardinals don't just select people based on their holiness. Beyond that there's the idea that if the Church should serve the poor, the Pope should come from a poor country. These are all good arguments for why an American won't be elected Pope, but they are not media scandals as you were suggesting.

The sex scandals will absolutely be a factor in the election, and the United States is ground zero for the scandals...it was just a few weeks ago that Cardinal Mahoney was relieved of duties by his successor. Your reading too much into nationality. Just because one American cardinal was involved in a sex scandal doesn't nessacirly mean they all are. Oh, and Europe has had just as much problems with this. A recent scandal involving an Irish Cardinal immediately comes to mind.

A recent scandal involving an Irish Cardinal immediately comes to mind. I didn't say they all are. But if there is any dirt on an American Pope, whatever it is, the media will dig it up. They will turn over every corner. If you think media scandal isn't an issue in the Vatican, you must have missed recent news...an American Pope certainly won't do anything to decrease the media pressure. There are also other issues with an American Pope (foreign policy perceptions, for example). Edited March 1, 2013 by Era Might

I really don't get where you're coming from. Edited March 1, 2013 by r2Dtoo
