Nihil Obstat
Cool. I joined. Cardinal Ouellet, as Benedict XVII, on day 3. I was a bit torn between Ouellet and Scola, but my guy tells me Ouellet has a better chance. ;)

I was a bit torn between Ouellet and Scola, but my guy tells me Ouellet has a better chance. ;) I voted Ouellet as well, but I voted on day six. Something tells me the Cardinals will take a while, especially considering that this time around it absolutely must be a 2-3rds majority. The other ways of electing a Pope if 2-3rds cannot be reached are not allowed to be used this time. I have a feeling we may have to tear the roof off that building... I suppose the 2/3 rule is relevant this time around. Still, conclaves in recent generations simply do not tend to last that long. I think six days is probably significantly outside what we will actually see.

How long have the past three lasted?
TeDeum
Cardinal Ouellet, Day 3 (I really thought about going with Day 4), Pope Pius XIII I have absolutely no experience in conclave elections, so I don't know how long they normally last. How long have the past three lasted? Benedict and John Paul I were both elected on the 2nd day. John Paul II was on the 3rd day. Nihil Obstat
Benedict and John Paul I were both elected on the 2nd day. John Paul II was on the 3rd day. When I was looking it up a couple weeks ago, I found that no conclave lasted even a full week during all of the 1900s, and obviously 2005 as well. Only a few of them lasted longer than three or four days. I did not check any further back than that.
Basilisa Marie
Oullet, Day 2, John XXIV. My theory is that it's going to whittle down to two or three candidates the first day - I'd bet my next paycheck that all the cardinals have been thinking and praying about who they'd vote for since Benedict announced his resignation, and they've all got shortlists. Either that or it's gonna last six days and we'll get a complete surprise. And I just think John XXIII is ballin'. :|

Nihil Obstat
Just purely IMO, the regnal name Paul VII would at this point be a bad sign. Rightly or wrongly, and regardless of your opinion of Paul VI, picking that name would indicate an intent to roll back Pope Benedict's liturgical initiatives, and refer back to Paul VI's very aggressive renovation* of the liturgy. All in all, I think "Paul VII" would send a message of backing away from Pope Benedict's pontificate. Again, this is just speculation on my part. *more accurately, Paul VI's approval of the aggressive renovations proposed by Bugnini and the rest. IMHO the regnal names of John, Paul, or John Paul are a little over saturated for the time being. I hope the next Pope picks one that hasn't been used in a while.
