Luigi
The Trappist nuns of Santa Rita in Sonoita, AZ have a new web design. It has more information than the previous page. http://www.santaritaabbey.org/abbey-journal/ Thought some of you might be interested.

petitpèlerin
Excellent. Thanks. I just might have to make a retreat while I'm out that way this summer.
FutureSister2009
I was looking through their website just for fun and I saw that they wake up at 3am. Um no thanks. 5am is enough.
krissylou
Well, yes, that is characteristic of Cistercians. The Gospels talk about Jesus getting up early to pray so they do too. Even lay Cistercians are expected to get up early to pray (although not THAT early). I think "early" is undefined for the laity but it is considered part of their distinguishing characteristics. I often go on retreat to a Trappistine abbey, but I figure that Lauds at 6:30 is quite early enough for me. But at least they're early to bed, early to rise. The idea that sends shivers up my spine are the Poor Clares who get up in the middle of the night for Vigils -- so that after you enter you never get an uninterrupted night of sleep again. (And okay, yes, they can do what they like without permission from me. But to my ear that sounds worse than early-to-bed-early-to-rise.)
TheresaThoma
I notice they do have an optional nap time in there so that helps, I currently work a 2am-8:30am shift in a bakery so between an early bedtime and a short nap I do just fine on sleep. Its actually quite nice to get up a pray just as the sun is rising!

Hahahaha I struggled to get out of bed at 10:30am today. :rotfl2: The sisters better shove me out of bed if/when I enter the convent.
nikita92
I noticed that some communities who have mostly older sisters..(such as St.Rita) have a more flexible rising schedule. 6:30ish-7:00. That is more my speed. 3:30am is more like getting up in the middle of the night
