eagle_eye222001
So in honor of the THUN-DER snow here where I fly, I thought I would dedicate a thread to experiences from this and similar storms from Pmrs. At 8:30 AM, there was no snow here. 2 hours later, 2.5 ish inches and visibility is down to like 700 feet. But I decide to fight it and go to campus to finish up an assignment for tomorrow and for class. Well, on my way to the bus stop, 2 cars get stuck in the parking lot. Being who I am, I get my metal shovel from the back of my car and dig them out so they can park. Since the snow came down so fast, cars can't even pull into spots as the snow is too high. Anyway, I was thinking of still going to campus when the tow truck guy who was leaving after dropping off a poor soul who got stuck out on the roads, rolled down his window and spoke like an ominous prophet of the deplorable road conditions and how the highway and several main roads were getting closed. That was enough to send the risk-reward ratio too high to go for so I stayed back at the apartment........and boy am I glad I did! So now it's about 1:30, and I've rescued 4 cars so far and we've gotten a bit over 4 inches. If your car is not 4x4, your stuck. To make matters worse for many students, by the time campus closed, a bunch of students from the apartment complex got trapped at campus as the buses stopped running. From my apartment view, I've been watching cars spin wheels and tons of students walking back from campus (which is a 40 minute walk in good conditions). Anyway, when I first started living off campus, I bought a metal snow shovel in case my car got stuck somewhere or I needed to dig it out. I didn't think it would have been near as useful as it has been. Where I live, we normally don't get winter storms like this, but when we do, having a shovel in the trunk comes in real handy. The shovel has been sitting in my trunk for almost two years now, and this is the first time I've used it. So glad I bought it and so glad its metal and not plastic trash. Oh yeah, and the cars are going about 5 MPH. I'm well aware some people up north have much bigger storms....but for the Midwest where I am, people are not prepared as the winter storms don't happen enough for people to get acclimated too. edit: for link Edited February 21, 2013 by eagle_eye222001
PadrePioOfPietrelcino
If your comfortable sharing where are to at? I'm in NE KS and my classes for today were cancelled by yesterday afternoon. My best friend I'd deployed so I help his wife out whenever I can and knowing the storm was coming we spent the last couple days prepping. I stayed in their guest room in order to help dig out in the morning. I stayed up until 5:00 AM waiting for the first flurries and nothing came. I went to bed, at 10:00 this morning a solid 11 inches were on the ground. I've spent the last few hours shoveling out neighbors and drive ways in ths eighborhood, which is mostly older and retired couples. It is a great feeling to help out ones neighbors, and it was cool to have the men from 6 houses moving from one drive to another, chatting and shoveling, while many of the wives were baking cookies and bringing out hot cocoa... It's these experiences that te older generation give us that make me realize how much out culture has become generally selfish and spiritually poorer. It makes me want to strengthen my piety so much more.

PhuturePriest
The blizzard is insane and relentless. I'm from southwest Kansas and we are getting hammered by it. It snowed a lot yesterday, and then all throughout last night and today it just went into blizzard conditions. The highway is completely shutdown, the city isn't blading the roads, and apparently in the middle of last night there was loud thunder that shook the house (Though I unsurprisingly slept through that). It's kind of cool because this is farm country and so most people have four-wheel drive trucks and tractors, so everyone is helping people out of their driveways and everyone is blading the roads on their own accord since the city workers won't. Gabriela
everyone is helping people out of their driveways and everyone is blading the roads on their own accord since the city workers won't. See, that's what happens when you leave the government out of things. People come together, communities strengthen, charity abounds... :cry4: It's beautiful, man. Just beautiful... PadrePioOfPietrelcino
Well we recieved 13 inches on thurs early morning, had a double snow day, and the roads are really just now getting clear enough for safe driving...Sun-teus they are expecting another 10-12 to fall in my area...Thank God for the moisture, but I'm wondering how my professors and school will be reacting to this.
