brianthephysicist
The next Pope will be named brianthephysicist and will take the name Pope Pinkie Pie. Hehehe...NO. I was thinking about it, and I'm thinking a Pope Frodo. In a theological sense, that's a great choice. Men that are elected Pope simply do not want to be. Their vestment room is literally nicknamed "The Room of Tears" because every man that walks in there starts to weep. Frodo is a very theological character. He didn't want to do what he did, but he was obedient and brave and he didn't quit until he finally succeeded and did the impossible (The reason this is theological is because it mirrors the Saints). Thus, being Pope Frodo is technically not a bad choice. Also, we will have brought thousands of Ringers to the Church as a result of this choice. That's actually very cool and good theologically too. Ironically I told Missy about this over the weekend as why we need to watch LotR together.
Nihil Obstat
I think there is a very high chance that it will be Pope Benedict XVII. I think John Paul III is also a significant possibility, and Pius XIII is an outside - nonetheless worth considering - chance which might indicate an intensifying of Benedict's efforts to revitalize the Church. Luigi
Seriously, those seriously antique names need some serious updating. I know a guy who knows Cardinal Dolan. So when Dolan gets elected (a detail of which am seriously sure), I'm gonna submit the following suggestions to His Holiness Elect, via the guy I know. All would end ________ The First Blake Cameron Dane Keith Kyle Jared Jason Jeremy Jonathan Justin or Bond. James Bond.
AnneLine
Pope Bond. James Bond. That has some real possibilities. Especially as he drives round in a really nice car... And he really IS God's Secret Agent Man! Almost as good as Ringo... Edited February 27, 2013 by AnneLine

Now that I thought about it a bit, I also think that Paul VII has a bit of weight, as does Leo XIV.
brianthephysicist
What about Pope Joseph? Not only do I love the three Joseph's from the Bible (or at least the big three I remember), "Technicolor Joseph" (as I like to call him), Joseph or Arimathea (who gave his tomb for Jesus), and Joseph of the Holy Family, it also happens to appear in both Joseph Alois Ratzinger and Karol Józef Wojtyła. AnneLine
My cardinal for whom I am praying is a Giuseppe - which is Joseph in Italian. Why not?

I guess a lot of people think there is a reasonable chance that the next pope picks some name that is unique thus far. Personally, I don't see that happening and I'm not sure why it would. But maybe I'm missing something. The regnal name, at least these days, sends a message. Benedict XVII would indicate an intention to stay the course. I bet Cardinal Ouellet would pick that. Pius XIII might be interpreted as an intensifying of Benedict's efforts of revitalization. Paul VII could indicate a... change of course. Leo could refer to an intended emphasis on social teaching. This is pure speculation, of course. Worth considering, at least.
Beati Pacifici
Pope Pacifici Just kidding. Although a Pope Luke would be cool for certain reasons made a little more obvious by me saying it :)
