Allykatzlive
I am one of those people that use organic products but not for moral or ethical reasons(eventhough I should.) I have to use them for the slight problem of skin allergies and rashes. I do try real hard to buy fair trade when I can but it can be hard sometimes. The one issue I do stand on is Cruelty free products that are organic. I just use them all the time. I do have my faves like Dr. Bronner's and I do use the Toms deodrant. Any one else use Organic Products? Any Faves? Any Failures? Edited February 19, 2013 by Allykatzlive

Papist
What are you talking about? I traded some Starbucks coffee for a dozen Pro V1 Xs. I thought that was a fair trade.

Papist- not that fair trade.Lol*I get the joke* We have a new Whole Foods here(Charlotte, NC). I have not been there yet, but people tell me it is great. My wife goes there Sundays after mass, while I am teaching. She bought some coffee there. Haven't tried it yet. As far as the fair trade is, it is my belief that the "fair trade" stamp is just a PR stunt to make people feel better buying their expensive coffee that comes from a very poor country. Basilisa Marie
Starbucks and Panera have coffee that isn't "fair trade" certified, but they have their own fields and treat workers fairly (the fields are right next to each other in some places), and Starbucks coffee tastes burnt because they harvest their beans later than Panera does. Oh the things you learn while being a slave to Mother Bread. :) I buy organic tomatoes and they taste soooo much better than the other ones. I also try to get eggs at places that don't treat their chickens horribly, but that's really hard to find because "cage-free" is a lot like "fair trade." I grew up with chickens and my dad grows tomatoes, so I just think they taste better. My mom uses Tom's deodorant but I can't stand it. She has issues with her body reacting to the aluminum. I love all things Burt's Bees. :)
ImageTrinity
We buy locally when possible, but most organic food would blow our grocery budget. Honestly, I think the whole thing is a bit of a racket anyway.
Madiesensei
Crystal salt deo,Enfusia, Avalon Organics, Dr.Bronners, Love and Toast, Curl Junkie, and Plenty of whole food suppliments, foods, teas. I love that stuff.
OnlySunshine
I love organic stuff but I can't buy it as often as I like. I love Whole Foods but I wish there were one on my side of town.
arfink
The organic thing definitely smacks of racket to me, but hey, I only worked for the local upscale grocery chain for 2 years. I could be wrong. Honestly, most of the time I can't tell much difference. The big thing I have seen is that places which do "organic" tend to be a little more concerned about the quality of their produce in general, and so obviously it tastes better than the stuff that the big chains carry which is generally older and not handled well. I found that at my store the difference in quality and taste between our organic and non organic stuff was negligible, while the difference between our produce as a whole and the stuff from the bigger chains was basically night and day. Just my 2 cents.
AnneLine
I tend to agree with you, ARFink about 'organic' but sometimes it really does make a difference in terms of pesticides and similar things. What I tend to look for is country of origin.... get nervouse about stuff from some countries where I know the pesticides that are banned in the US are still often widely used. Unfortunately, that sometimes means those fruits and veges that have been treated with some of those chemicals can look absolutely beautiful, too... So... I try to use my judgment. If something looks too perfect, it makes me a little nervous....
Allykatzlive
Yes, I do think it is a PR Stunt as well, Papist. It tries to hit with emotions and make people think that they are buying something morally good. I also think that there is fingers diping in the gold. I.E. People taking profit along the route hence why I think in part why it is so expensive. Which is not suppose to be that way. A good percentage is suppose to help the farmer but if you have seen the process of fair trade( I watched a movie in my international studies class and had my eyes open), Anyone would suspect that there is more to it than the eye can see. I did switched partly due to the pesticide issue. I ask myself what could this do to my body? And why do these foods look a little too perfect? But also why is this apple so huge? I can barely eat the entire thing. I did it as well for the allergies(as I mentioned before.) I do have a mild alimuinum allegy. The only allergy I have is to one of the Protein Persvatives in the TB TImed Test. Unfortunately, I can not get out of it because of being a Health Care worker. The people I get the test from I aware of this. My arm just gets this 1/2 inch rash at the injection site and it is gone within a week. On the Local issue, I do definitely buy local. Partly, due to Colorado having this thing of keeping locally grown foods in the area. I.E. Palisade Peaches, Rocky Ford Melon, San Luis Potatoes, and Penrose Apples. Eowyn
I do organic as much as I can afford. I also am trying to shop more local.
