I am going to make a video on evangelization and how to properly do it, but first I want to make sure I have enough knowledge about it. Do any of you have links or perhaps some great insights on proper evangelization?

Yes, get some experience first so you can recount what worked and what didn't.

I do have some experience debating with Protestants. That's part of how I got into Catholicism, actually. I loved sharing the Faith with others. But I did so many things wrong, and many others do, so I figured a nice explanation on evangelizing/debating and how to do it right would be good. I actually just remembered that in The Essential Catholic Survival Guide there is a chapter dedicated to this very subject, so I'll be sure to read it.

Evangelism, if you mean it in its proper sense, reaching heathens with the Gospel goes best if you can let him know how he stands before God: guilty. And how he might change this.

If you mean how to sheep steal Christians from other churches make bold use of the Catholic Church's deep historicity and quote the Bible a lot.

Read the chapters in Marcel Lefebvre's biography dealing with his time in French West Africa as a Holy Ghost Father. :) It is fascinating.

Important point for street evangelization: It is easier (especially with protestants) when you make an effort to pick out and agree with every bit of truth you can find in what they have to say. Then and generally only then are they more willing to listen to you when you explain to them exactly where they went round the bend.

Always stay positive.

Always keep control

Better to say less than say something beyond your realm. Then that's just stupid.

Not so much about knowing the Scripture, but about knowing the context. That's where they go wrong. If a verse is a 'contradiction', then it's because they've misinterpreted it.

Go do it!!!! YYYYYYeaaaaaaaaaah!!

But it's AWEsome!! L.O.V.E. Evangelization!!  :bounce:

Thanks for the tips! But just so everyone is clearer, I'm not really talking street evangelization. I was talking more one-on-one with that guy next to you at your office or with the Mormon that just rang your doorbell.

Ah! Yes!  One on one is the best kind of evangelization, imho.

The easiest thing is to let them come to you.  Don't hide your Catholicism, but don't shove it in their face either.  Sometimes a Catholic topic comes up in conversation. In the meantime, just be the best person you can be.

Don't start out by telling people how horrible they are.  They'll shut down and ignore you, or get hostile to you.  Always be kind and loving. Religious topics are very sensitive and personal to people, and can make people pretty vulnerable.  No one responds well to "you're going to hell" - they'll probably laugh at you.

How you say things is just as important as what you say. You have to know your audience - Apologetics is what happens when the educated Mormon knocks on your door and you spar with arguments. Evangelization is what happens when you teach someone about the faith.

Don't ever expect to win.  People never convert people.  God converts people - and if you're a good enough tool God might decide to use you to plant a seed. You have to go about evangelization with humility.  It's good to hope that you can clear up misunderstandings about what the Church teaches and why the Church teaches it, and why it makes sense to us.

Work on your own spiritual life.  Pray lots, and keep familiarizing yourself with the Bible and Church teachings.  Always be learning and growing.

No probs, street evangelization is my speciality (or more like (I think) the most fun!!). Yeah, what BM said. First be a witness, possibly most importantly constantly try to show the joy and light that God brings to your life. People ask me why I sometimes (lol) 'glow'. Best time ever to say... 'It's the Lord!!!!' Sound's kinda like something from a kids movie, but it's always the light in your eyes and the smile on your face that makes people wonder.

-Always tell the truth (obviously)

-Be open to any pain they may need to let out. Often times people hold some grudge against Catholics..... stuff like the scandals, as we all know.... or some ruler-wielding-nun from their childhood... something or other. Just be an ear.

Would love to see this clip, FP!!

....lol, and with Mormons and JWs at your door, while I should't, *SIGH* I'm sometimes inclined to simply nod at everything they say until they've had a splurge, and then it's 'No thanks!' and shut the door with a pearly white grin. Don't put that in a video, ha!l

Oh, and remember... your living witness is your argument, your verbal witness to following questions is your explanation.

It's tough to beat a lot of good, humbling prayer.
