Autumn Dusk
If he has had it since before he became pope, it does not really worry me. Actually, it should worry you. Pacemakers are good for, at best, about 10 years. Their effectiveness and wiring can suffer after that. For those who are very old (in their 80's) when they get their pacemaker it often means that they cannot survive another full replacement surgery. It will give them some quality years, but it's still tough because if your heart rhythm gets off it basically zaps you...and pretty hard at that. Ash Wednesday
The press and antagonists of the Vatican in general would have had a field day had word of this gotten out years before.

I remember many people only giving Benedict 3 years to live. I distinctly remember many of them saying they'rd be a new Pope before 2010. Some even speculated his reign would be less than a year and the council chose Benedict in the same way "they chose" JPI to be an "interm" Pope. So no, I don't think there would of been a field day. Benedict's health has never been stellar.

Nihil Obstat
"Would of"? Really? Meh. English is developing such that "would of" and similar phrases will likely become fairly acceptable within maybe 50-100 years (ETA: It is already de facto standard usage in spoken English, except in very formal settings.). Perscriptivism is lame and myopic. "Would of" is not a hill worth dying on. Edited February 12, 2013 by Nihil Obstat
