I don't understand????? Why hasn't this man been defrocked??? What don't our leaders understand???

Doesn't being a pedophile basically invalidate the sacrament of holy orders, as it would the sacrament of holy matrimony? Not the sin of acting on the pedophilia, but just the state of being a pedophile? Someone who has this problem is not emotionally or psychologically healthy enough to contract a valid marriage let alone validly receive holy orders. Surely???

Hassanism has a perfect track record regarding the defrocking of lusty Priests. It also offers new members a long term investment portfolio and generous pension plans.

What the Bishops were really saying in the Dallas Charter: any low level priest we don't like for any reason is guilty until proven innocent.  Any low level priest who's our friend or in favor with us is innocent until proven guilty, but there's a certain number of motions we'll go through if there's an accusation we can't ignore.  Bishops and any other members of the hierarchy are innocent until it's proven that there's a public outcry strong enough that we can't ignore it, and then we'll just do everything possible for PR damage control.

Basically, the Dallas Charter isn't really a tool for protecting children, it's a tool for engaging in ecclesiastical politics, a weapon to use against those you don't like.  There are some good things being done under its auspices, but the inherent hypocrisy in it just makes it an obvious blatant exercise in the worst and most disgusting forms of ecclesiastical politics there is.  Sorry, but I call it like I see it, and it's rotten to the highest levels, there is no use in denying that.  By its fruits you will know it, and you see the fruits of the Dallas Charter and current policies: they are basically the exact opposite of the Magnificat, the lowly are pushed down while the powerful are exalted.

And this is exactly the same attitude that caused the cover-up.  If you read through some of the files from the LA archdiocese, there are so many excuses made, lots of "oh but he's such a good priest!" and "he shows so much aptitude!!!" stuff.

If the Church actually took the sin of scandal seriously, it would remove all priests who are convicted of a crime involving sexual abuse from any position of public ministry.  Any attempt at defending the Church's reputation or honor or whatever has only served to exponentially increase the amount of scandal, and resulted in many more people leaving the Church.

I can't wait to see what the Church looks like in fifty years. Sometimes it feels like it won't come soon enough.

Unfortunately, some of the laypeople also contribute to this via "Catholic jingoism" and hero worship.  Some simply cannot believe that priests can do such things, so the victims are not believed (there was an article almost 20 years ago in The Reader detailing how a boy was punished - physically - by his mother when he told her about being abused by a priest).  Others have the attitude that the Church is above the law and quote a private revelation about how Christ will handle His priests, as well as a ridculous idea on the order that if the Church were to say that 2+2 does not equal four we should out of blind obedience agree.  (I actually read that quoute here on Phatmass some time ago).

Everything aside, I hope that as an assistant director of clergy or whatever, that he has very little influence on the actual spiritual direction of current or potential seminarians. Seriously, formation has been bad enough for so long.

I agree.  Whether the position he holds is "prestigious" or not is irrelevant.  My concern is that his past actions indicate that he is not suited to help in the formation of future priests in any capacity.
