At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union there were less than 5,000 active Orthodox parishes in the country, while today there are over 30,000.  The Russian Church also includes nearly 300 eparchies in Russia and the nations surrounding Russia.  Recovery from the atheist Bolshevik persecution of a generation ago is an ongoing process.
