Praised be Jesus Christ! :)

I really don't know anything about this community, but I see about them a lot in the church bulletin so I thought I'd post about them if anyone was interested to know more. There is a Catholic retreat house called "Trinita" in New Hartford, CT staffed by the Sisters. From their webpage, it seems that they have a lot of ministries. Their founder was Fr. Thomas Judge, CM. About their spirituality, "We recognize that only a spiritual person can lead an apostolic life, and that we cannot be spiritual without prayer. Great value is placed on periods of prayerful silence and recollection. The Eucharist is the center and sun of our apostolic lives, and the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in our chapels. We attend Mass daily, and pray together in our Cenacles. We also have special devotions to the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and the Incarnation."

This is Sr. Sara Butler’s community! If you haven’t heard of her, she was one of the first two women ever appointed to the International Theological Commission, and she wrote this book defending the Church’s traditional teaching on women’s ordination. Sr. Sara has taught theology at Mundelein Seminary in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and also at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York. She’s also a very prayerful person, and one of the most amazing Sisters I’ve ever met! (There is a great video where she tells part of her vocation story here: http://saltandlighttv.org/witness/butler.php )

The Missionary Servants of the Blessed Trinity was founded in the early 20th century to keep the Catholic faith alive among people who were in danger of falling away from the Church. So basically, they have been specifically dedicated to what we now call “the New Evangelization” before there was even a term for it. (I told Sister once that their vocation slogan should be, “The New Evangelization: we did it before it was cool!”) I think the reason why they have such a wide variety of apostolates is because their community is committed to taking on work that would otherwise be abandoned.

One interesting thing about this community was that they never wore a recognizable habit or veil (although they did have sort of a uniform in the earlier days). Because they were founded in rural Alabama in the 1920’s—where there was a lot of open anti-Catholic sentiment—looking outwardly like Catholic religious would have made it impossible to do their apostolate, since many of the people they were founded to serve would have been afraid to be seen with a Sister.

The Missionary Servants are a very “active” community, but I know they have a lot of beautiful devotions. Besides a general devotion to the Trinity, the one that comes most readily to mind is their perpetual novena to the Holy Spirit. Their overall spirituality is very Vincentian.

Some of these sisters live near me and are wonderful.  They have a beautiful convent too.  They do a lot of good work but are very obviously also deeply spiritual women.
