Mary+Immaculate<3
Here are some videos giving basic, but helpful insight into the devotion to Our Lady, the promises, etc. done by the great gabiafterhours (Gabriel) and famous (now) sister sheiscatholic (Leah): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lN0MrjRow0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38hMoGfh10U I really hope your brother is just going through a phase. The devil doesn't want people to wear the brown scapular because he won't triumph if they are both outwardly and inwardly devoted to the Blessed Mother. Having two older brothers at home, I know they can be a hassle, but I think that the others on here are right. Instead of saying "this is something you're supposed to do," try to make it more of a "this is a cool thing to do because it grants you protection and graces." Of course, it is always harder to offer the long explanation, but he does have to right to know what he is getting himself (back) into if he chooses to wear it again. And yeah, I totally agree. When I realized I should have mentioned the promises with it and everything, he was kind of already storming out the door and there wasn't much I could do. Basilisa Marie
I have a sister who sounds similar to your brother. I'm older than her by almost 3 years, and I can't tell her to do anything (part of it probably stems from living in my obnoxious over-achieving in school shadow for a decade). She's not as religious as I am, and frankly it's hard to even get her to go to mass (she's going through a phase of only wanting to do things she wants to do). Maybe one way you can approach your brother is ask him to do something "religious" WITH you. Frame it as a brotherly activity. Like praying the rosary, or a decade of the rosary, or going to adoration for a bit, or something. If he says no, be cool with it and shrug it off, but keep offering every so often. The scapular to me seems kinda like a big commitment for someone who isn't ready for it, and frankly there's not a whole lot of point to wearing it if you aren't going to do the devotions. :) Maybe start smaller. Papist
Tell him he does not have to wear it 24 friggin 7. Tell him he just needs to make sure he is wearing it at the moment he his death. When he asks why, there's your open door.

Tell him he just needs to make sure he is wearing it at the moment he his death. When he asks why, there's your open door. This would work with most normal people. However, he has an insane fear of death and hell in general. Just mentioning either makes him freaked out and he won't continue the conversation. Even though the Scapular is so you won't go to hell, he will still be mad because I said the two forbidden words in his vocabulary.

Yeah...thats difficult, I imagine that the real issue is some sort of neurosis or scrupulosity You may have triggered something in him. I think for some people the fear of hell is so great they stay away from religious stuff because it gets too overwhelming. If you know a priest who has a psychology background you may want to share this with him in order to facilliate a better conversation with your brother. I think this is the reason that many people are attracted to the lighter religions... because their fear of hell is paralyzing. Now, some take it too far and ignore hell altogether, which is just as bad, but I would see if you can work within your limitations.

My brother does have ADD, which I hear can cause these sorts of things.
add
Yeah...that's difficult, I imagine that the real issue is some sort of neurosis or scrupulosity or maybe he just needs to take a nap. his reaction to your suggestion seems quite normal, it certainly is not neurotic behavior
Autumn Dusk
I'll see if I can find a Priest with said degree. My brother does have ADD, which I hear can cause these sorts of things. I understand, I come from a family that is deeply ADHD and ADD...so there's loads of things that we are just really careful about. Still, for a grown adult to be petrified of hell to such a degree that they shut down would indicate that their is something else going on. Most people who reach the age of reason will fear hell but not loose it if they speak about Hell. His reaction sounds more like what a 4-5yo would do...the "I don't hear you" phase. He really does have a bad temper.
