zabbazooey
Got some basics, I got Walking with God in lieu of a Catholic bible for now because it breaks down the bible into a narrative format. Easier for me to digest and understand. I disliked the bible, couldn't get anything spiritually from it unless it was at Mass, so the kind lady at the Catholic bookstore suggested it. I'll eventually get a bible, I just want to get the 'gist' of it and understand what I am reading. This Christopher West book was suggested as a way to ease into TOTB too. Missal because the wording of Mass has changed since I last went. CCC and Compendium for obvious reasons :) rosary too. I feel bad I got rid of a lot of Catholic books and stuff, but c'est la vie. The sales lady also hooked me up with a priest in the parish I will be living by who is very orthodox and encouraged me to learn more about getting my marriage blessed by the Church (talked to fiance today, he said he would do this if I wanted to down the road, but more as a non-Catholic, he will go to church 1-2x/mo but doesn't want to be a devout Catholic, agreed to raise children in the faith if I wanted). I kind of told her a little of why I was there because I didn't know how else to articulate what I was looking for, but didn't go into gory details. She was sooo not judgmental at all, more happy that I am looking at coming back to church and wanted to learn about NFP! I also got a ton of local resources too! So all in all, still learning, still praying. These books and rosary should be a good starting point. Not pictured: the scapular and rosary bracelet I found in my jewelry box, and the St. Dymphna medal I also picked up :) And here's an obligatory picture of our wedding rings, his came in the mail today and he won't stop wearing it :) he is so excited to get married too! Hurry up, May 3!!! Edited January 30, 2013 by zabbazooey
Nihil Obstat
You probably made that woman's day, since now she had a role in someone trying to return to the Church. :)

zabbazooey
You probably made that woman's day, since now she had a role in someone trying to return to the Church. :) Yes, she was quite understanding and very sweet. "Well since you're looking into utilizing NFP properly, you should read TOTB, read this book by Mr. West first though. Easier to digest" Her name was Rachel too :) Everything she said and did was so not condescending, even when I slipped about my living arrangements. All she did was encourage Mass, prayer, and abstinence, emphasizing to NOT receive communion until after our wedding day (and confession). I don't know what I was afraid of, obviously not everyone will be so nice, but it's comforting to have people like her put into my life when I want to go back to church. I just don't want the finger pointing, "you're going to hell" speech. I know I am cohabiting, I am doing my best to rectify a bad situation, and we'll be married inside of 90 days or so. It was refreshing! Starting with the Christopher West book and the Compendium of the CCC, working in from there.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is hard to find nicer ladies than ones that work in Catholic bookstores. I went into one once and this lady just went on and on about how well-mannered I was. :hehe: Another time I went and I mentioned my Confirmation Saint was Saint Padre Pio, so this lady gave me a card she got of him from when before he was canonized a Saint. They are so nice and I love going in there. If you ever want a condescending-free zone, Catholic bookstore ladies are definitely one of the surest places! And great selection of books! I know you're already reading stuff, but in the future I highly recommend things by Jason Evert. He is a Catholic chastity speaker, and he really is wonderful. He helped me better myself with his wonderful books and videos. If you want to hear some free full talks of his, I know where to find some online. St. Padre Pio is the bee's knees, such a cool saint. Mine is St. Joan of Arc, she is cool too, but I picked her for a dumb reason. I love all things French and so I picked her. I was 16, so that is my excuse. She is still an amazing example! My RCIA sponsor was trying to get me to pick St. Bernadette.

You may have to download RealPlayer if you don't have it, but RealPlayer is great and it has not slowed down my computer or made any problems at all. http://chastity.com/research/audio/video-vault/audiovideo-vault He has always been my favorite Saint, ever since I was really little. He was the first Saint I ever learned about, in fact. Saint Joan of Arc is a wonderful Saint, but one of my top two favorite French Saints (And one of my top favorite Saints in general) is Saint Therese. If you haven't read about her, you should make it a priority in the near future.

Putting those back on my list to pick up after I get done reading these (which, probably will be...at the end of the semester lol) I'll let you know what I think of the talks! I've had it for about a year, but I'm finally going to read it all and finish it this Lent! I really love Saint Therese because her life and mine are very similar, and I feel very close to her. She even performed some miracles for me recently, and I can't help but appreciate such gestures! Okay! There is also a question and answer thing on his website, chastity.com, and there are also some things from his wife, Chrystalina Evert, as well as many other great people. Jason Evert is great and sensible and he is my personal favorite, but a lot of people like his wife a lot too because she had a very imperfect life as a teenager, and she was emotionally abused by her boyfriends, so she has a lot of wisdom to offer for many girls today. OnlySunshine
I'm glad you got so many amazing Catholic resources. If I could recommend another, it would be to read I Believe in Love which is a personal retreat based on the teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux. I read it and then passed it on to my mom and I still haven't gotten it back. :hehe2:

LinaSt.Cecilia2772
I just want to say, after reading your other thread and this one, YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I'm so happy that you opened up that thread because I had many of the same questions myself, and you've given me an example and opportunity to not be afraid to ask questions of the faith that I struggle with. Oh and major props for taking the initiative on your faith. Brother Adam was right that God sure is flirting with you. One last thing, Catholic Bookstores are the Bomb dot com. You got a load of great resources. Prayers for you on this Journey!! :)
Kateri89
Some more suggestions for awesome reading: Anything written by Immaculee Ilibagiza lol "No Turning Back" by Fr. Donald Calloway The Imitation of Christ Once you decide to get a Bible, I HIGHLY recommend the Lectio Divina version I recently purchased. It looks like this:
