Ash Wednesday is Feb. 13. I intend to have my annual chocolate pig-out on the 12th instead of Valentines Day.

Thanks for correcting this! I just noticed this morning. :) My parents have been buying those paczki's  (the big polish donuts that come out before Lent every year) I still haven't had one and probably won't, but they always look so good! :saint2:

Considering the fact that 6 months ago, I was once again a disaffected Protestant without a church and not regularly attending anywhere and now I regularly attend and am sacramentally part of what a Vatican document calls a true Church, I'll mostly keep doing what I am doing. If I do anything, it will just be an extra up in my effort to get into a habit of reading scripture each day.

Are the Orthodox guidelines of fasting not quite strict?

Have pretty much decided to do the FlyLady thread (will put it in open mic in next day or so....) and it may be useful to any of you who are thinking about just trying to find more time to do stuff, organizing stuff, or just want to incorporate more prayer and spirituality into your Lent -- and ideally permanently into your lives.

I think it also can be a place where people will be able to just make comments on how their own Lenten journey is going... because we are Phamily and we walk this way with our Lord together.   We all may be tackling different things... .but we are doing it with the same love and same spirit of repentence, of metanoia.....

Let's start praying for each other.... and for all those that God is calling to return to Him this Lent......

Blessings,

AnneLine

I imagine most Eastern churches are similar though it does vary from Church to Church. I'm newish and can't fast with food right now for medical reasons, so my priest isn't having me worry too much about fasting just yet and would rather worry about what is in my heart than my stomach right now.

I might go back to my piece of bread fasting every 2-3 days a week during lent... and maybe reading my sci-fi books unless it is for school.

I want to avoid doing lots and lots of things, because I find that when I do this, self-denial and fasting become a challenging game as opposed to something meaningful. I'm going to choose just one or two things, and this year, I'll be keeping them to myself. :)

YES. THIS. i'm a big fan instead of trying to one up everyone and compare who's "suffering" more or "adding" more just to keep it between you and the Lord and when people ask tell them you're making sacrifices for the Lord. that's all they need to know.

Very good point.   Right now I think people are just trying to get ideas, but I see your point.

We can and should encourage each other, but we don't always need to know the details....

Groo the Wanderer

Going to start taking care of my body, now that's its starting to fall apart.

1. no more overeating

2. no more eating when not hungry

3. no more eating for comfort

4. eat healthier

5. do some exercise every day, even if just 10 pushups and situps before bed

I was on a directed retreat during Lent once and there was a woman there who was fasting on bread throughout Lent.  (I think she was from one of the Eastern rite Churches).  All I could say was ... wow.  She was already into week 3.

There is another person that I have read about that has done 40 days of fasting.

Needless to say that won't be me!  Can't do it.  Can barely do the fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (due to health conditions).  And I would say that any significant fast (i.e. bread for Lent or a full fast for more than a day) needs to be discussed with a spiritual director.

I fasted for 2 week on bread (sometimes I ate meat since this was during basketball season and I need to have some extra calories in my diet) before my birthday (September 8 the Blessed Mother's birthday also). It was really hard let's just say...

No soda or chocolate. I would like to do something spiritual as well, maybe (at least) a decade of the rosary every night.

I think I'm going to try praying Morning Prayer & Evening Prayer LOTH every day. But I still don't know what my sacrifice will be.

I think I've decided what I'm going to do for lent.

1) No white bread/flour

2) No red meat

3) Keep my room completely clean (maybe including making my bed everyday)

4) Pray either a rosary of Chaplet or divine mercy every day.

5) I've done this in years past where I get a list of people, one person per day of Lent, and pray for them on that day. Haven't decided if i'm doing that this year or not.

Of course I'm going to limit it to a few of these, but these are my ideas so far.

Thanks for the reminder! I'm going to do that again this year.
