VeniJesuAmorMi

when does lent start this year?  just so i know cuz i can't get to mass.

Ash Wednesday is Feb. 14th. Just about two weeks now. :)

Very nice!  Monfort or Kolbe?  Or some other flavor of consecration?

I'm a Militia Immaculata person. :)

I'm using a book called " 33 Days to Morning Glory" by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley. He's a Marian Father of the Immaculate Conception at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy (a really beautiful place to visit!) I heard about this through a friend. For each day there is a prayer and meditation for preparation. There is a consecration prayer given at the end that can be used or you can write your own. I really think I'll write my own to make it more personal. Being a contemplative I was really excited to hear that there is a contemplative way to make the consecration. It seems fitting also that there be a way to make the consecration this way because Our Blessed Mother was one to "ponder all these things in her heart." I haven't looked into other forms of consecration, though I only knew of Monfort's way before I learned about this book, but I'm looking forward to this for sure. :)

Well, I'm giving up all snacking, so nothing eating between meals.

Last lent I prayed the rosary daily. Maybe this year I'll tack on the chaplet of divine mercy...

I have finally gotten back into my daily rosary habit, so now I might try this too! What a great idea.

I wonder if it would be realistic for Lent to "gain one plenary indulgence each week"... I would probably have to arrange for weekly confession, somehow. Either go to my parish every Saturday, or perhaps work something out with the campus chaplain.

This is an amazing idea too! And it might even be possible for me because my parish was designated as a place where one can receive an indulgence during the year of faith: link

The specific requirements for the plenary indulgence are:

• Those visiting basilicas, cathedrals, catacombs or a holy site designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith (see local list, below) must participate in a liturgy, “or at least pause for an appropriate time in prayer and with pious meditations, concluding with the recitation of the Our Father, the profession of faith in any legitimate form, invocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary and, where appropriate, of the Holy Apostles or patron saints.”

I also really miss my adoration hour, and can't seem to fit in morning prayer at all, so those are on the list too.

It is actually surprisingly easy to gain a plenary indulgence. I believe a half hour of reading Scripture is even one way to do it. For most people the limiting factor is to be able to honestly say they are detached from all sin. This is interpreted somewhat leniently, as I understand it.

I'm a huuuuuuuge fan of eating stuff.  It doesn't matter if it's healthy food or junk food, I enjoy the action of eating food and it's something I constantly crave to do.  I also enjoy drinking, whether it's water, soda, beer, rum, milkshakes, etc. but I'll go a few weeks only drinking water and I'm honestly not bothered by it.  So to attack the specific craving of eating, I'm going on a liquid fast for lent.  I will be consuming a wide variety of drinks (protein shakes, fruit smoothies, V8, ensure, beer, etc.) for my nutrients and even taking a multivitamin, but I will not be eating.

I will also be committing to participate in a weekly lectio divina and attending a minimum of 1 weekday mass each week (I have to get up at 6:30 instead of my usual 9:30).

I don't know if I'll actually be able to do this, but I want to do my best to go out of my way to help someone (family, friend, or stranger) every single day during lent.

Feb. 20th is the starting date for preparation for total consecration to Jesus through Mary to be able to make the consecration for March 25th; the Feast of the Annunciation.

Annunciation is generally on March 25 -- except when that date falls during Holy Week like it does this year. Looking online at various diocesan websites and Roman calendars, it seems to have been transferred this year to the 8th of April, which is the first weekday after the Octave of Easter.

Here's an online Roman calendar to plan your preparations :) Good idea to do a Marian consecration for Lent.

I'm actually excited for what I'm doing this year. As usual, I'm giving up my Facebook and junk food. But also I will be reading the Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. I try to read it every year and it doesn't always go through all the way. This year I am going to read an excerpt every day. Plus, our Catholic book club at school is reading Jesus of Nazareth Holy Week by our one and only Pope Benedict XVI. So I've got my Lenten readings piled up. I'm also going to try to keep up with attending Mass every day and Adoration as often as possible.

It's also a wonderful way to further sanctify those who dwell/work around/with you.

I have NO IDEA what I will be doing for Lent.  I *may* just choose to try to live my Life Plan a bit more perfectly -- that should suffice (since I'm so far off of it that it would be the perfect Lenten penance).

Actually an update to this -- I see my new s.d. in about a week.  Ha.  I think he'll help define this Lent for me :|.

Two weeks ... ugh.  NOOOOOO.  (As Max said though -- it means Easter gets here quicker.)

really? I've always been too terrified to try it, even though I will eat their other food.. lol

Also I thought of another one I'm going to do... get up at 8am at the latest everyday!!! I know that sounds late, but I'm a grad student!!

I just had one tonight for dinner and LOVED it!  The tartar sauce is so good!  It had a light lemon flavor to it and just enough dill pickle relish to give it a nice flavor.  I also loved the fish patty because it was flaky and moist.

I have yet to find a food that is worth getting sick from the gluten after eating...

Well, I'm not a Celiac, so it doesn't bother me so much if I just eat wheat once in a blue moon.  I prefer to stay clear of it and I wish McDonald's had a gluten-free bun and breading.  ;)

You might want to keep some Kaopectate or Immodium on hand.  That first week on a liquid diet is not going to be pretty...  :X

Hey, Brian,

Hmmm... kind of a mixed reaction to this one. I see what you are saying about wanting to focus on the eating thing as a way of taming/controlling out-of-control things... that makes sense to me.   I'm just not so sure about the liquids only part of it.   God made our bodies to work with certain things, and I'm just not sure we're intended to just be on liquids for a long-ish period of time.

Someone close to me had some major dental work done and had to have his jaw wired for a number of weeks.  He'd never had a weight problem before that... but he sure has since then.  And the doctors think it was the fact that his body thought it wasn't going to get solid food back that may have triggered the problems.  I'd hate something unexpected like that to happen for you.  I've also had a number of friends who did those 'medically supervised fast diets' and not one of them has kept the weight off... in fact, they've put on much more afterwards.  My bet is it is the same mechanism.

What would seem to me to be a better option would be something like joining an on-line nutrition trackers like www.sparkpeople.com or something comparable. They have the option of a recommended diet (or you can just track what you do eat and drink), and it will let you know if you are running low on certain nutrients (and you can adjust those for the ones you want to track.)  I'd think you could probably use the options to get the majority of your food in liquid form (if that is your preference) but still opt for some of the solid things (perhaps ones you don't like so much?) as a compromise.  Might be something to ask your doctor about....?

Seems to me that the things we choose for Lent should be something we can incorporate permanently into our lifestyles... I've always preferred to 'add' something rather than 'take away' something in general.   A few years ago my husband and I added extra fruit and veges to our diets... and it's been a very beneficial thing.... and we're grateful for that odd choice for Lent.

Ok for Lent

-definitely keeping my room clean, like completely clean.

-More prayer (this one I'm still nailing down the specifics on)

-NOT COMPLAINING

-Finish Divine Mercy

that is all I can think of for now.

TT, you gave me a good idea!  I think what I would like to do is organize my room (including getting rid of junk) and then keeping it clean.  I'm HORRIBLE at just tossing stuff aside instead of putting it in it's rightful place.  Keeping my room clean would definitely be a good penance.  :)

Pray an hour a day minimum, read the Bible half an hour a day minimum, read a book an hour a day minimum, sleep on the floor every night (Except for Sunday nights), fast on Fridays, not go on the internet or do anything technology-related until five in the afternoon (Except quickly looking at important messages), and that's all I have so far. I don't want it to be too lax, so I'm trying to think of other things to add.

Peace to you brother...

Sounds like your going for a home run, hopefully you can get it. If the ball doesn't make it over the fence remember you can still run the bases.

Onward christian souls.

I want to improve my spiritual life and aim at overcoming some vices I have been struggling with. Since I am able to go to confession (aiming for late this week or early next week for my first confession)it will start Lent off nicely. Does anyone have any advice for increasing/improving prayer life. Also plan on fasting on Friday's and trying to attend weekly mass. There a few other things I would like to do, this is my last Lent as a 'protestant' after all..yay confirmation this Easter!

Peace to you bretheren in christ...

I find i'm more at rest prayer wise when i goto holy mass more than just sundays, what i mean is the whole mass is one big prayer, easy way to get prayer in daily if not bangin out enough our fathers, hail mary's and glory be's (lol). And i have found i can bring prayer intentions to the holy eucharist and offer some of what i am to recieve temporly and perpetualy to those intentions (i offer these up when kneeling after recieving the precious body and blood.) Hope that all helps. Also if thats not down your ally, when i started attending holy mass @ the age of 26 and hadn't attended since about 13-14 the good lord had me just doing daily rosary, daily scripture, sunday mass and confession.

God bless you. :)

I'm not telling because i'm going to practise being more secretive with my plans. Arg there we go i just told you my plan.

I'm actualy unsure what to do,the last few years i think i have been doing no internet, i think last year i tried to add a few more and hit a home run,and failed and dismayed and beat myself up. So this year i may just concentrate on one thing hopefully, perhaps i'm not a home run hitter and just have to run the bases. (basics.)

Onward christian souls.

JESUS iz LORD.

Love without reason,Hope without hype.
