Nihil Obstat
I wonder if it would be realistic for Lent to "gain one plenary indulgence each week"... I would probably have to arrange for weekly confession, somehow. Either go to my parish every Saturday, or perhaps work something out with the campus chaplain. LinaSt.Cecilia2772
Am I the only one relying on this thread to give me ideas for Lent?? Cause like a lot of people, I have no freaking clue what I'm doing for Lent this year.
To Jesus Through Mary
It's not a diet. It's a brutal way to CONDITION the chocolate centers of your brain that scream like angry children when they aren't tended to at regular intervals. Do it. :| We can suffer together. I'm down- so long as my SD is down we shall tame those wild angry children.
cmaD2006
It's not a diet. It's a brutal way to CONDITION the chocolate centers of your brain that scream like angry children when they aren't tended to at regular intervals. Do it. :| We can suffer together. It's also a wonderful way to further sanctify those who dwell/work around/with you. I have NO IDEA what I will be doing for Lent. I *may* just choose to try to live my Life Plan a bit more perfectly -- that should suffice (since I'm so far off of it that it would be the perfect Lenten penance). beatitude
I want to avoid doing lots and lots of things, because I find that when I do this, self-denial and fasting become a challenging game as opposed to something meaningful. I'm going to choose just one or two things, and this year, I'll be keeping them to myself. :)
Gabriela
Quit smoking. With nicotine patches. It's the best I can do. For real, this time...
Archaeology cat
Nothing dietary - already in Lent for that. ;) (for those not in the know, I've had to give up dairy, soy, eggs, tomatoes, beef, pork, and alcohol because of Leo's gallstones). I need to be better at prayer time, yet I feel like I should be doing that anyway. I've thought about going to wearing only skirts instead of trousers during Lent, but I don't know. zabbazooey
Quit smoking. With nicotine patches. It's the best I can do. For real, this time... If it wasn't for Lent (and probably should be every day) you should try e cigs. I am down to 0mg and I can choose all sorts of flavors, right now I have pomegranate shisha, green apple shisha, fruit snack flavor, and banana. Just vapor, no nicotine anymore. I still get that hand-to-mouth habit and craving filled, but I am no longer hooked on nicotine or buying cigarettes. No smoking 'analog' cigarettes since December 1st! It's hard, but doable. But if it's for Lent, I'm not sure how sacrificial switching to an e cig is.
Gabriela
No smoking 'analog' cigarettes since December 1st! Congratulations! :-) I considered e-cigarettes, but they just seem so complicated and the investment is risky unless you're sure you'll like them, which I'm not. Plus, I think they're more expensive than patches, no?
zabbazooey
The initial investment is. But the walmart brand patches are $35 a box for 2 weeks of patches...and you'll be on them for a while. And they itch. Don't forget to take them off or crazy nightmares ensue. They leave sticky residue. A kit at the local store I go to starts at $50, then you have to buy 'juice' for it. The 'juice' is $15 for a 30mL bottle that last ~1 month. It seems difficult at first, but once you get it it's easy. They have cheapo pre filled cartridge e cig kits at walmart, but they don't taste as good to me. You can control how much nicotine is put into the 'juices' at the place I go to, which means you can eventually ease yourself off. They might have prefilled ones that eventually cut down to 0mg, I dunno. The shop I go to have at least 50 flavors, too. It's like going to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory LOL. The kits go up in price based on customization. I have a pretty cool, super girly one, but I got it for Christmas hehe. I think the crazy customizable kit is $85. So yeah, you pay around $50 for the starter kit, $15 for one juice, but after that you're just buying the cartomizers ($4 a piece, they last a month, like a filter) and juices. Cheaper than patches and for SURE cheaper than cigs. And more fun :) My store is local, but I am sure there's something similar in your area and they have tons of stuff online too! EDIT: If you aren't sure you'll like e cigs, pick up a blu e cig at Walgreens for $10. It's disposable and you can see if you'll like e cigs. Or as the my e cig guy calls it...vaping! :D Edited January 30, 2013 by zabbazooey

MissScripture
i have no freakin' idea. :pinch: nothing that i've thought about sounds "right", ya know what i mean? Exactly why I don't know what I'm doing. Am I the only one relying on this thread to give me ideas for Lent?? Cause like a lot of people, I have no freaking clue what I'm doing for Lent this year. And this would be why I started it! ;) Nothing dietary - already in Lent for that. ;) (for those not in the know, I've had to give up dairy, soy, eggs, tomatoes, beef, pork, and alcohol because of Leo's gallstones). Yeah, my fasting certainly won't be dietary! I should probably work on offering it up, though. Mostly I just whine about it...And exactly the same here about the prayer time. I think of stuff I coudl do, then think, "I should do that, anyway!" And then I don't. So, maybe I should start for Lent and keep going with it. I might try to add going to Adoration on Fridays, as they have that at our parish from 8 to noon, and I feel less obnoxious bringing the little man there, since it's in a whole big Church, and not a tiny chapel. I honestly never mind little kids at Adoration, even in a little chapel. It just makes me happy to see them there, whether or not they're actually praying. And.... I don't know what I'm going to do yet. I think I'll give up desserts, but I want to add something else.... Maybe it would be fitting to add at least half an hour of reading the Catechism every day, since I'm supposed to be reading it in preparation for being received into the Church on Easter. (But, hey, we still have an entire two weeks! :p) Thanks for the thread, it's made me actually think!
