Nihil Obstat
Oh, shop for sales too. At Staples you will always find a few on sale. Probably other stores too. No reason to pay full price, when you can get comparable specs for $50 off. :)
OnlySunshine
You might want to consider a Laptop/Tablet hybrid. If you want a traditional keyboard, you have it but then you can break the tablet away and use that in classes and it's very portable. Plus, the newer ones have Windows 8 installed. Here is one by Lenovo: http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/yoga/yoga-13/
PhuturePriest
GHz? i7? Engrish, prease. To put it in really simple terms: i5 = fast computer. i7 = super fast computer. i3 works as long as you don't overload it with video games and things like that, but I don't think that is a concern you will have. :P
missionseeker
I miss old (and I mean old. I bought it refurbished like 5 years ago.It has pretty much NOTHING going for it as far OS and memory. lol Worked great (still does, but I dropped it on cement floor [twice!] and broke the screen. It'll still work connected to a monitor though. lol) IBM thinkpad. I convinced my friend she should get lenovo a few years ago. She loves it. I have a toshiba now, but if I ever get a new one, I'm thinking it'll be a Lenovo.
mcts
If you have an HH Gregg around you, I suggest going in and checking to see if they have any closeouts. When I worked there, we'd totally gut some stuff just to get it off the shelves, even though it wasn't more than a couple of months old, because we didn't have the space. Autumn Dusk
If you're a student, you shouldn't be paying more than $80 for the word suite...you can use sites like campusestore.com or journeyeducation.com or call your college. I have a Lenovo S10 and it's indisturcible with good battery life. I have to use a UBS cd rom drive. I got it off of tigerdirect.com, and I always shop there...my whole family does. That being said, I'm more impressed by the chrome books of late. They are the lighest computers on the market and a teensy USB drive can give them endless storage space. My friend just got one and it's SOOO light. it's nothing to carry around all day.
