Emilyann's Tea And Biscuits

Oh, Emily!!!   My parents were WWII era (in fact WWII veterans!) (because of the depression and the war, their lives were put on hold for decades... literally... so they had me in the 1950's).   I grew up with some of that as well.  As did my husband who was very close to his grandmother who went through WWII in Italy... we found hundreds of rolls of toilet paper in her basement when it was cleared out.... because you just don't know, I guess.....

There is a story in my family that when they cleaned out my grandmother's house, they found a small box in the closet.  It was neatly labeled "String too short to use".  And it did, indeed, contain tiny bits of string that were... too short to use!

We aren't sure what she was keeping it for -- fire starting?   Stuffing things?  we just don't know....   In my own family it has come to mean saving things that really are just clutter.... but it really is a funny thing, don't you think!

And... I had a wonderful Singer straight stitch sewing machine... that I traded in for a upgraded 'zig-zag' model after a number of years.  The new machine worked beautifully (and still does!) but... the instructions were in English that had been very badly translated from  Japanese.  And parts of it are simply UNINTELLIGIBLE!  There are still features I can't begin to figure out!!!

Speaking of which... have you ever seen this website.... it has the neatest 'demo' flash player examples of how to do different sewing things.... it is WONDERFUL!!!!!

It used to be possible to connect to it directly, but now for some reason, you have to click on the correct drawing -- it is the one ABOVE the 'how to videos"  and it is genius!!!!!

You should post that "string too short to use" story in nunsense's thread, I bet that'd get a giggle out of her. Made me laugh at least!

My grandparents are very similar, when my grandmother died my grandfather didn't want us to throw out instruction manuals...for things she hadn't owned in YEARS. We also found tins in the pantry that were older than me! Both my mother's parents were only children so the house is full of clutter they inherited from their parents (and my grandfather is 90 so you can imagine how old some of that stuff is!)

Just after I posted about putting the heating on in September, I checked the news and found an article asking... Is it too early to put the central heating on? :hehe:

Only she looks much more dishevelled than that. :P

Today, I heard a funny noise coming from the kitchen, so I went to have a look.

My dog was eating CAT LITTER.

Dogs are so GROSS!

Yes, I can relate to the string too short to use! I had aunts like that.

As for that lovely doggie - when my daughter was young, we had a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I was never into small dogs but she fell in love with her and so did I. We called her Duchess, a big name for a little dog.

Pic not her...but cute...

You have a Westie? They are so cute and funny!

I do indeed. They are silly little dogs, but very loveable :)

One of the nice things about having moved back home is having pets around actually.

Aw that is cute! I love little dogs, although I am hoping to be able to adopt my grandfather's greyhound one day.

Today I knitted. I love knitting. I learnt to knit about 10 when a friend dragged me to knitting club at school. I've never picked it up as a hobby and I won't be knitting a jumper anytime soon, but it's fun. A smoothie company does this thing called the big knit where people knit hats for the smoothie bottles and they then donate money from those smoothie bottles to an old folks charity. So, a little hat seemed like the perfect thing to knit!

I made a little hat like that! It's cream with a blue pom-pom on top. It's not the neatest knitting ever, but I'm pretty chuffed. :)

That's really cool! Knitting is so relaxing I find, I made another little hat today and a matching little scarf that is now keeping one of my Beanie Babies warm. :hehe:

A friend of mine from uni posted this on Facebook. I get this almost every time I tell people what I studied at uni.

I get something similar when I mention astronomy to non-sciencey people. About half of them think Astrology.... sigh....

Yup.  Was blessed to have a wonderful astronomy prof who just about frothed at the mouth whenever anyone confused the two....
