Most of these are accurate, but at least in Kansas, we call them "curtains", not "drapes". We also interchange the words "movies" and "films". Calling a trunk a "boot" simply makes no sense at all.

  • 4 weeks later...

Recently, I have had a crazy craving for pumpkin pie.

I LOVE pumpkin pie.

I haven't had a pumpkin pie in YEARS.

The English have never quite grasped the wonder that is pumpkin pie, so the last time I had it was when I got some of the pumpkin stuff at an American import store that was about two hours drive away from my college - and nowhere near where I live now! They don't even sell actual pumpkins in this country except for the week of Halloween.

BUT

Today I was at the supermarket and I spotted something wonderful:

So now I can have pumpkin pie!

The trouble with moving between countries is finding things you love that you can't get in your home country. When I first moved to the UK 9 years ago, there were no Oreos! Now Oreos are everywhere, but pumpkin pie has been eluding me until now.

rotfl   Sad thing is it took this American a few minutes to figure it out.

I will point out, however, that they do call our odd system the 'English' system.....

And then of course, let's not get started with years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds!!!!!

I'd love to see THAT put into metric!!!!

Uh... it's about time!!!!!

Hmm...I suppose your system is quite similar to the imperial measurements. We use a bizarre mix of imperial and metric. I'd tell you my height in feet and inches and my weight in kilograms (actually that I wouldn't tell you at all :P )

I have real trouble when using American recipes sometimes. I mean, a cup of butter?? What kind of dumb way to measure butter is that? Butter isn't a liquid! Flour and sugar too, it's SO much easier to weigh them than try and get an accurate measurement in cups.

My mother was offered a job in Washington a few years ago and I am glad she didn't take it - I'd have gone mad there! :P

Those are some odd measuring tools!

It has gotten so cold in England recently.  :cold: We've even had the heating on. In September. Not that long ago I was sunbathing in the garden! It's 12ºC today...or 53ºF for those of you with rollercoaster measuring systems. :P

Ah, I did not know that! I want to get more into dressmaking at some point...I found a whole load of fabric in my grandmother's stuff. God bless her, she had a very WWII mentality of "save everything! I can find a use for this!" so I now have a nice little hoard of free sewing supplies. I may have to get my sewing machine out and do some experimenting.

How I got my sewing machine...my mother cannot sew to save her life. She breaks sewing machine needles and once sewed her finger to my sister's bathing suit without realising it. Because I can sew I was always given the sewing tasks until eventually (after the third time sewing up the hem of my sister's school trousers by hand) I said "if you want me to keep repairing everything buy me a sewing machine!"
