Nihil Obstat
Hey guys, So I have an account on Reddit, and recently I've been talking to a guy who moderates a currently-inactive subforum called "Catechism". I saw a lot of potential to turn the subreddit into a relatively active one, with the right material and motivation. The way reddit works is that anyone with an account can visit any subreddit community, and post and respond to threads. By default everything is going to be public, so there is good opportunity for a wide variety of perspectives. My plan for /r/Catechism is to make it a general "Catholic question and answer" forum, much like our own Q&A board. I think that, at least at first, it will be easiest to use 'standard' answers, for instance from the Catechism, the Summa, the Tridentine Catechism, Baltimore Catechism, Denzinger, etc., etc.. That takes out most, if not all potential for accidental error. Where I can see this growing is if we can get a small core community of people who are knowledgeable and willing to respond to people's questions or concerns about the faith. People like our excellent Scholars here, as well as our Church Militant would be great at doing that, as well as anyone else here who feels like they might have something to offer. One of the first things I'm planning on doing is talking to the moderators at the /r/Catholicism subreddit, which is the main Catholic presence on Reddit. (/r/Catholic is run by anti-Catholic trolls, unfortunately.) If they're interesting, I'm hoping they'll be willing to support our community and allow us to direct question and answer traffic towards /r/Catechism. So, to get right down to it, is anyone here on Phatmass interested in signing up on Reddit, and potentially helping me get this /r/Catechism community off the ground? Basilisa Marie
I mean, I don't have a super awesome special phatmass tag, but I'd be willing to help. :)
Nihil Obstat
I would be very grateful for your help. :) Right this second there is not anything going on, but I am planning on working on it as quickly as possible. What I am doing right now, besides looking for people willing to take a lead in answering questions, is getting the ball rolling with the moderator on /r/Catholicism, which could potentially cause things to move very quickly. Anyway, that is my roundabout way of saying that things are quite boring right this very second, but I intend to make that change soon. :) The link to the community is reddit.com/r/catechism. I would encourage you to make an account on Reddit if you do not already have one. It only takes a couple seconds. (Be careful, for anyone who does not know how Reddit works. If you go looking for pornography it is quite easy to find, and once in a while if you are not careful you find it even though you did not want to. That is not to say that porn just jumps out at you, and if you stick to the Catholic subs you should be fine, but it is more accessible than I would like.) I am talking to the other moderator in /r/catechism. I need to gauge his feelings on adding several moderators who are willing to help us out in generating traffic and answering questions. If he is on board with that idea, then this small core of people I am looking for right now will probably become moderators in the foreseeable future. And like the internet in general, bad stuff is always only a couple clicks away. :(

I would like to learn the catechism. They didn't do that in my class before I was confirmed. They didn't teach us anything about the faith or the church. I asked Father if I could attend a catechism class and he said the only one was with the kids. I said okay I would like to do that. He said no. I would prefer doing this with someone rather than going through the thing by myself.

Basilisa Marie
Reddit is a famous web forum full of all kinds of different people, and all kinds of different special-interest sub-forums. It calls it's the "front page of the internet" like a newspaper, because it's full of links to sites and news stories and other things, and comments on those links. Reddit is notoriously anti-religion and their atheism sub-forum is famous.
Nihil Obstat
But the Catholicism sub tends to be surprisingly good. With a couple infrequent exceptions.
