Great To Be Different

Warning: Ponies

I know that ponies have been relegated to one thread in the lame board, but I found this video to be uplifting and inspirational.

The female voice in the song is a pony by the name of "Derpy Hooves".  She has this name because she's crossed eyed and clumsy.  Here crossed eyes were an accident spotted by the fandom.  She gained instant appeal and was included in the show due to popular demand.  Derpy teaches that it's okay to love ourselves even though we're imperfect.  She's well loved for her joy and kindness in spite of haters that criticize her for her glaring imperfections.

This song focuses on the fact that we are all different.  We shouldn't strive to be "normal", but just to be ourselves.

Enjoy!

Lyrics:

[spoiler]

It was a dark day when I lost my faith
I wasn't the pony I thought I'd be
And it seemed that no one could relate
There was nothing left to see

So I took a walk to the edge of the town
And thought of leaving it all behind
When I saw a little letter fall right out of the sky
As a grey mare hovered way up high

I thought I was crazy when I saw her wave
And then simply fly away
So I opened the letter and looked inside
And what was written made my day...

It said--

[Chorus]

Isn't it great to be different?
Isn't it wonderful to be exactly who you are?
When you learn to start accepting yourself
You'll become a shining star

To this day the writing on that page
Is mottled by the tears I shed
Cuz at that moment something inside me changed
And a bright new path I lead

I ran back home and I picked up my old guitar
And I started strumming these chords
And I sang her words along with this song
And I heard someone sing along

And we sang--

[Chorus]

I turned around and I saw her at my door
That cute grey mare with the wall-eyed stare
She said, "I've heard you play and sing before.
And I heard a sadness I could not bear."

"I just wanted to tell you that the hardest thing I've faced
Wasn't the teasing or the pain
It was convincing myself I wasn't stupid, strange, or lame
And helping others do the same."

*whistling*

These last few years flew by just like a blur
I'm now exactly where I should be
And I know I owe it all to her
The beautiful mare who believed in me~

[Chorus x 2]

You'll become a shining star (Isn't it wonderful)
You'll become a shining star (Isn't it great)

When you learn to love just who you are

I'm sorry if I offend you, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept that grown men take this show seriously.

And do note, that comment wasn't directed to Brian, but the gentleman in the video. The fact that he almost started to cry due to a generic letter from a cartoon character. I understand the idea has great significance for him, but seems to have given a cartoon character hero status. This isn't MLK, dude, it's a cartoon.

Do you know how many people have never heard MLK? Do you know how many people are completely bereft of all contact with the past? That's where things like MLP step in to fill the gaps. I think it's great that grown men will embrace this as a way to contact the culture.

Just a general comment - there's a huge difference between "oh, what a cute show" and...well, I'll let this picture speak for itself:

And an arbitrarily large number of points in between.

Seems to me that this brony couldn't have found the note at a better time. He was hurting and this gave him peace. A little God moment, fandom aside.

Other points:

1) He's a pretty good singer. :like: I'm not a fan of whoever sang Derpy, though.

2) I judge him for the Rarity in the background. Rarity? Really?

3) That guy(?) cosplaying as Pinkie Pie creeeeeeeeeeeeps me out.

4) The video is great. Cheesy? Maybe. But the thing about MLP is that the messages are real, and so many people have had their spirits radically lifted thanks to the show. A lot of people are exposed to Christian values (yes, really) that would otherwise never consider them. It's a positive influence, and you'll never hear me knock it for that reason.

I love this song. This sounds so messed up, but this MLP song hit me hard emotionally. In a good way. :)

Thanks, Brian!

hehe no worries, I had to throw the notion of letting myself get offended at someone's misunderstanding of my culture the day I decided I wanted to be a legit Catholic.

It's not so much the show itself (although that is good on its own), but the community that the fandom has built up around it.  Imagine if we had a phatmass convention and someone left a simple yet touching anonymous personal note for you.  Even if you knew who was leaving the note, it would still be touching.  And as for the use of Derpy, it's like if I were to reference someone from scripture; there's tons of backstory and knowledge of the person that you would immediately bring to the table.

That's an amazing quote.

rotfl  yea every fandom gets it's weirdos that want to literally be part of the show.  Star Trek characters tend to look roughly human enough that trekkies can dress up as characters and it isn't considered terribly bizarre.  And yes, unfortunately there are people that take it even farther (rule 34), but if that's all you're willing to see then you're missing out on tons of genuine good that the show has done.  Can't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
