Old Liturgy Of The Hours 4 Volumes

Era Might

Recommended Posts

I have the 4 volume set of the Liturgy of the Hours. Were these replaced when the new Mass translation was issued? Are these old sets useless now (liturgically speaking)?

No, they are not. There has yet to be a new translation of the Liturgy of the Hours. At the USCCB Bishops meeting in November, the Bishops approved work on an updated translation of the Liturgy of the Hours. Given the time it normally takes to do such things, however, your "old" set will most likely remain the current set for several more years.

One thing you can do, however, is use the new Collect translations from the Third Edition of the Roman Missal to replace the concluding prayer at the end of Lauds and Vespers, as they are the same prayer (translated from the same Latin text).

Yup.

As I tell the Secular Order members who ask about this, if you look in the front of those volumes, you'll see an official letter type thing that says that this version is now in force and it is what should be used after such-and-such a date.

If/when there is a change, that kind of letter will be in the front of the new ones... and they'll give everyone plenty of warning regarding the 'expiration date'.

Having said that... if someone can't afford the new one, for a reasonable period of time, the current version would be ok for private use, I'm pretty certain.... at least for people who aren't bound to recitation (priests, deacons, nuns).... but I am sure we'll all know well in advance when the changes are finally promulgated.....
