Abstinence And The Virgin Mary

So, I run a pro-life blog and whenever I so much as say the word "abstinence," this one idiot messages me (I eventually blocked him) and said, "Yeah, well, doesn't your whole stupid Christianity cult revolve around a virgin birth? So why are you talking about abstinence being failproof...?"

And I guess what I'm asking for is a basic explanation. This guy is a diehard, modern atheist (you know, thinks that anyone - especially Christians - who are religious are stupid and naive, constantly bashes Christianity, mocks God, etc.). I was thinking of a response along the lines of this: How many women, save for Mary, who conceived by the Holy Spirit, do you know who have never had sex and ended up pregnant anyway?

Yeah, that guy is just stupid. Anyway, Mary would not have spontaneously found herself pregnant. Like wake up one day and all of a sudden BABY on the way.... Uhhh, no. She had to say yes, so even for the Virgin Mary, abstinence is fail proof. She had to DO something to wind up pregnant, just that in her case it wasn't having sex. Point is, you can't get pregnant unless you do something to make it possible.

Mary got pregnant because she wanted to get pregnant.  God told her what His plan was, what her role in it would be, and she said "okay."  Abstinence involves the intent to postpone pregnancy.  Mary didn't have any intent to postpone her pregnancy of Jesus.

Whereas her situation with Joseph, they practiced abstinence according to Jewish law, and continued to do so after they were married and Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Follow up: But what about Jesus' brothers and sisters?  There's no distinction in hebrew between "brother" "half brother" or "cousin."

:)

LOL. That guy does not know what he is talking about, but at first glance, that is a hilariously incorrect way of framing things.

I have a list of reasons to remain abstinent before marriage other than pregnancy if that would be of any value.

I'm seconding all the recommendations here.
