The Spiritual Combat - By Dom Scupoli.

I was guided to this book by a friend and have given it to others and I find the words of this 16th century monk fascinating and they resonate to these times, as one realizes his struggles are our struggles, his times are turbulant as they are today.

My heart has opened up fuller to the love of our Father, God Almighty, the more I read the more my faith deepens.  Not only is it a spiritual combat, it will testt your mental stamina, and it was a favorite of Saint Frances De Sales.  Jump into the book and discuss it with me and anyone that wants to read it's wisdom.

The name of the book is the title of the thread -- "The Spiritual Combat" by Dom Scupoli.

I read parts of the book -- it is a bit heavy to read.  If I'm up to picking it up again I'll let you know and share (I may try to pick it up during Lent).

Just came across this thread, and I have to say also that this book is a very good read; it would be a good book to consider reading during Lent. I purchased it some years ago and read it once. Not too long ago, because of an experience I went through, I picked it up again and read it; and then I read it again. I went through and underlined certain parts to go back on that are very helpful to remember; especially during those times of trial when things aren't exactly clear. I just picked it up again (after I saw this thread) and I looked back at some of the parts I underlined, and looking back as I have passed through the trial I was going through, I can really see how perhaps reflecting on these words had been helpful because I now see how true they are and how much I advanced (only by the grace and mercy of God of course.) Here's just a few good ones to share:

"For if all things are directed by Providence, to which your will is entirely comfortable, everything then will turn out according to your desires, for nothing can happen that will not be agreeable to your will."

"You may rest assured that the greater courage you show in conquering yourself or defeating your enemies, the sooner will your difficulties diminish, and they will gradually vanish."

"Fight therefore, with great determination. Do not let the weakness of your nature be an excuse. If your strength fails you, ask more from God. He will not refuse your request. Consider this: if the fury of your enemies is great, and their numbers overwhelming, the love which God holds for you is infinitely greater. The angel who protects you and the Saints who intercede for you are more numerous."

"An absolute dominion has been given us be the Almighty. All the senses, the evil spirits, and the whole created universe banded together cannot diminish the liberty of the will in acting as often, in any manner, and to any end that it desires."

"The most effective remedy against evil is purity of heart. Everyone engaged in the spiritual combat must be armed with it, discarding the old man and putting on the new. The remedy is applied in this way. In everything that we undertake, pursue, reject, we divest ourselves of all human considerations, and do only what is conformable to the will of God."

Alright, so I posted more than a few, but these are really good ones. There is a few others I have underlined that are really good to know, perhaps I'll come back later and post them. Maybe these will be helpful to someone else also. :)

Amen to you I say my brother.  This book is timeless.  It helped me reach the awareness that I have in my faith to this day after my trials, for I was the Prodical son and he welcomed me into his home, with arms opened wide and love in his heart.
