OnlySunshine
Can someone please help me before I throw my laptop out the window? I am having such a difficult time with it. I really wish I could buy a new one but I don't get my financial aid until January 25th. :( The monitor keeps flickering and I think it has a bad inverter. I don't know what to do with it. I have all online classes this semester again so it's imperative that I have a working computer.

eagle_eye222001
Is there any more information you can share? What operating system? Did this problem just start? Does it consistently happen or is it intermittent? This may be of help. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3175_7-5020810-1.html
arfink
I can't help you remotely if it's a hardware problem. Depending on what you need this machine to be able to do and whether you have available ethernet I may be willing to send you a loaner.

Tony
Do you have any spare monitors you can plug in? if so and once it's plugged in (and you're on a PC), hold the fn key and press f8. It might take a couple times until it recognizes the plugged in monitor. There's probably a way to get a spare monitor working on apples too. arfink
As a first course of action, I suggest moving the laptops lid open and closed a few times, try different angles, and see if it seems to be related to the flickering (it gets better or worse when the lid is in particular spots). If it is, then you have a bad flex cable, which is a fairly easy repair to have done by a technician. If the position of the laptop's lid seems to be unrelated to the flickering then you may have any number of problems, from a bad inverter to a fault somewhere in the LVDS path. Again, something you'd need a technician to look at.

It's driving me crazy. My computer is an HP G62 laptop and I bought it in 2011. Of course, it's no longer under warranty (over 1 year since purchase). I can't give my computer to a technician because I need it for school. I'm in a bind. :(

Like, someone who is a real crack computer whiz with too much time on their hands? Because I've done flex cable replacement myself in the past. It's not too tough, but you do need to know what you're doing. You don't need special tools besides screwdrivers and an ESD band, at least on the vast majority of laptops. The service manual for your laptop (assuming you have the 15" variant) is here: http://www.laptopmanual.net/hp-g62-a25sa-service-manual/ I do NOT KNOW FOR CERTAIN that it is the flex cable that is bad, but looking on eBay for replacement parts yields the following: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-HP-G62-15-6-LCD-Video-Cable-7AAX6LCTP00-AX6CTP00-/330844806635?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d07e31deb Replacement video cables are between $10 and $20 depending on make and model. Again, you would need to have someone actually look this over first and make sure that's what needs to be replaced. Maybe bribe him with pizza or something. :)

I just sold my non-working car yesterday, too. :(
OnlySunshine
I might just purchase an Android tablet as a backup until I can afford a regular laptop. I've been wanting one for a while anyway and this gives me cause to buy one. Does anyone know of a good tablet that's under $100. It must have good wi-fi, reliable internet access, and (of course) a pop-up keyboard. I'd buy a Google Nexus or a Kindle HD Fire, but I don't have that much money. They're very nice. Keep in mind it will not run Office 2010 though.
