TheresaThoma
For the cardigans Kohls has some awesome basic ones that are just the right weight/warmth. The cut also works well with a collared shirt (I wear mine at work frequently).

ToJesusMyHeart
Congratulations Marys Child!!! SO VERY EXCITING!!! How many other girls will be entering with you? Mantilla 1 white (for chapel until postulancy – you will be an “aspirant†for several days before being more formally received as a veiled postulant) Score. What a beautiful item to have on your list! :) 1 pair of “flip-flops†for the shower Maybe I am silly, but why would you need shoes for the shower? CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCEPTANCE!!! The Marian Sisters (www.mariansisters.com) are a TREMENDOUS community!
emmaberry101
Ah, Mary's Child, you have just made my New Year! Happy New Year, by the way! (I am sure it is very happy for you with this joyous news!) Thank you for posting your list-it is so interesting seeing it. Also, June 7th or June 8th are both phenomenal days to enter. You are so blessed! It is fitting, as in a way you will be entering into the chaste, poor, and obedient Hearts of Jesus and Mary when you enter religious life. Love it! I was going to ask you to post a picture of the postulant garb, but then I remembered that you will be among the first postulants. Silly me. On the external front, your Sisters habits are just lovely. I love the white and blue combination they have chosen, along with the Srs of Life and SMMC (and others that I forgot). I will be praying for you as you enter this exciting (busy) period. Abundant blessings on 2013, and I sincerely hope this is the last New Years you spend outside of the convent! Antigonos
Shoes in the shower: something to prevent your feet from coming in contact with the floor. In any dormitory setting, athlete's foot is rife and very hard to get rid of. Also, wet floors in winter are probably excruciatingly cold, not to mention slippery. But how is a convent different from your normal house? This community is very small (4) and is no different from living at home with two parents and a sibling. As for coldness, I am nearly certain this convent has heat. And bathroom rugs. :)
AnneLine
Congratulations Mary's Child!!!!!! Keep us informed if we can be of ANY help to you!!!! If there is anything HEAVY that those of us in California can help you assemble and pick up when you get here, let us know!!!! Nikita - I'm not positive... but usually if a community wants you to have those, they tell you , or tell you you may bring some 'personal toiletry items' Barring that... If they aren't on the list... probably not gonna get to bring 'em. TJMH - I agree it is probably in large part as Antigonos suggests -- health and safety --... but it could also be a modesty requirement. In the community I was in, we were told we were NOT to have bare feet ever, not even in our cells, as it would be contrary to modesty. They could be following that kind of logic. (I think that part of the rationale was making up for so much immodesty in the world...). As with so many things on these lists -- and customs within communities -- what they put on it and assembling it is just part of the life you have chosen. Assemble the stuff, bring it up there, and they'll teach you how they want you to use them! And if there is another reason -- maybe MC can let us know! Apologies, but the modesty argument makes zero sense in my brain.
emmaberry101
Some communities (pre-Vatican II, I think) made the Sisters wear a modesty cloth when bathing. This was mentioned in a past thread on VS. I find each community's perspective on modesty fascinating! Some communities allow you to roll up your sleeves when washing dishes, some don't. Some shave, some don't. Some sleep in a habit, some don't. Etc, etc. So interesting, especially considering that so many have differing customs, yet all are trying to imitate Christ. AnneLine
This is so confusing. The Poor Clare Colletines go barefoot all day every day. Are they being immodest? Apologies, but the modesty argument makes zero sense in my brain. Actually, I more or less agree with you. Neither walking around a room (or the whole house) barefoot nor washing dishes with elbows exposed particularly alluring to me ... but we were told that both were NOT to be done for that reason... and we wer ALWAYS to wear slippers to the shower and cover our heads outside our cells. As a lay person, I expose feet & elbows happily and don't think the Good Lord (or my human visitors) are particularly scandalized. (I never had the nerve to ask the Novice Mistress whether our Lady, who appared barefoot a few times, was being immodest. Yup, I do agree with you...) But religious life is a funny thinig --- I realize some of these sound silly.... and there are a lot of similar things that postulants and novices just have to learn . If you just look at them with ONLY human common sense they make no sense... but many of the customs have taken on significance within the communities and are part of their culture. (Like keeping hands under capes or scapulars, for example....) It is just the way it is... and it is beautiful in its own way. If someone is called to a community... they'll be given the graces to accept and love the customs of their new land... We wish you TOTAL JOY in your new land, Mary's Child! maximillion
Obedience........ While I am not an advocate of the planting cabbages upside down school of thought, I know from experience that not questioning, even in little things like 'why do I need to keep covered up' in fact, not even bothering one's head about it, is a very good preparation for giving up one's own will. In this case, one's will (desire) to know why. Who knows why she needs flip flops for the shower? Who cares? This is what has been asked. Do all in obedience and without question, and as another poster has said, it will be explained once there (or not, as the case may be). Lovely news MarysChild. Congratulations and prayers. I am sure the next months will go by in a flash. I have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord so will direct my attention there....
