Hubertus
What are we talking about here? I like the 8:30am Mass on Sundays, because a Sunday doesn't feel like it's really started until I've gone to Mass, so an earlier Mass gives me more Sunday. Aloysius
hmm... what happened to the other thread ? I threw the Sarum Mass into it just to be snarky :smokey: but it appears to have not gotten off the ground, eh? it's perfectly legitimate to think that one or the other form of the Roman Rite is better than the other; you should, of course, acknowledge that each one can be significant to people in different ways and that each person's experience of God through whatever rites they have found significant over the years is a good thing that is certainly not being criticized by a comparison between two missals. just like when we say that the new translation is absolutely better than the old translation that doesn't mean that people didn't find significance in the old translation, or that it wasn't okay for them to have liked it better or that their experiences with it were not good. this idea that just because a rite is approved by the Church we have no standing whatsoever to be amateur armchair liturgists and look into things and say what things we think are better and worse about this or that form is a bit ridiculous to me. for many people, the intellectual engagement with the faith is a kind of meditation so they find things like studying theology to be beneficial, the same can be true for studying liturgy, some people engage with things in an intellectual way and engaging with the liturgy in that way can deepen one's understanding of it (and that can include debate over different forms, such debates can deepen understanding). but just like you don't have to study theology to be a good Catholic, nor do you have to study the liturgy intellectually; however, both the fields of theology AND the study of the liturgy ought to have free debating amongst those who do wish to learn about it. we should be able to acknowledge that there are various forms approved by the Church and that people find significance in all sorts of various forms (and people even find significance in some liturgical abuses--God writes straight with crooked lines and so long as their experiences bring them closer to True Faith and don't foster some heresy, there's no need to condemn those experiences even while we work to get rid of liturgical abuses... for instance, plenty of women have had great encounters with God getting their feet washed on Maundy Thursday; it's not supposed to work that way and we should try to see that corrected so that only men have feet washed on that day to symbolize the Apostles, but it's not like those experiences were wrong), and that we have every right to have an opinion as to what would be best for the Roman Liturgy. for instance, I personally think that it is a bad idea for the GIRM to allow songs and hymns to replace the mass propers, I think songs and hymns, if sung, should be sung in addition to the singing of the propers for the Sunday. I also think that many of the options in the Novus Ordo open it up to abuse, I think that we should've retained the 3 x 3 x 3 Kyrie, and I don't like the lack of prayers at the foot of the altar and I definitely don't like the option of skipping the Confiteor. those are reasons I prefer the Extraordinary Form to the Ordinary Form, none of that is a condemnation of people who find significance in the form the Liturgy is in now, but I have no problem saying that I think the liturgy would be better with those features restored and I have no problem saying that I'm not just stating that as a matter of personal preference, any more than some theologian might argue Thomism over Mollinism as a matter of personal preference, I suggest that these things are truly better for the Roman Liturgy. anyway, that's my little diatribe against this kind of liturgical relativism that says we need to minimize any discussion of liturgy down to "I prefer it as long as it's a valid Mass". if you don't wish to engage in intellectual dissections of the liturgy to determine what is best for the Roman Liturgy, you don't have to engage in those discussions; just like you don't have to participate in theological debates, simple humble appreciation is always the high ideal that we all should get to at the end of the day when we finally plop down in our pews on Sunday morning; but some people are, at heart, armchair theologians; and some people are, at heart, armchair liturgists, and for such people these kinds of discussions can deepen their understanding and their worship and there is no need to discourage them or suggest that we cannot say x is better than y in liturgy just because both x and y are approved, a healthy debate and discussion should be totally welcome. Basilisa Marie
Novus Ordo, Sunday, familiar tunes for mass parts, hymns I know, a priest who makes a solid attempt at chant, and a homily that doesn't spark roaring critiques in my head.
