Mrs. Bro. Adam
going to confession? Do they have to be so far into the church, or could they just go, even if they aren't full Catholic yet?
Thy Geekdom Come
You cannot receive the sacrament until you are a Catholic. You are, however, as far as I know, welcome to go into the confessional and get things off your chest, but the priest cannot grant you absolution. If you do this, be sure not to be holding up a long line and be sure that you tell him that you are in RCIA and just wanted to get stuff off your chest. Mrs. Bro. Adam
So...I have to wait until Easter Vigil 2005 to be able to partake in the sacrament of confession?
Thy Geekdom Come
Yes, sorry. Think of it as all the more to anticipate. In the meantime, you are in RCIA, live it! Look to St. Martin of Tours...
Mrs. Bro. Adam
I'd, actually, rather not go to RCIA and just become reconciled to the church... I've already read the material that they've given us, and they don't teach anything! ARgh! Now I'm beginning to not want to wait to get reconciled! I wanna be reconciled now! Thy Geekdom Come
lol Anticipation is good. If they're not teaching you anything, perhaps you could delve into some other areas of interest in your free time. You would still go to RCIA, but you could read the Lives of the Saints, or study Catholic Culture, etc. www.internetpadre.com
Mrs. Bro. Adam
Couldn't I just skip the inquiry part of RCIA? Make it half the time? Please?!

Sojourner
You cannot receive the sacrament until you are a Catholic. You are, however, as far as I know, welcome to go into the confessional and get things off your chest, but the priest cannot grant you absolution. If you do this, be sure not to be holding up a long line and be sure that you tell him that you are in RCIA and just wanted to get stuff off your chest.
Actually, Raphael, my understanding is that baptized Christians (a category Mrs. Bro. Adam would fall into, I believe) are to receive the sacrament of confession before confirmation and the Eucharist. According to How to Become a Catholic on Catholic Answers:
The sacrament of baptism removes all sins committed prior to it, but since Christians have already been baptized, it is necessary for them to confess mortal sins committed since baptism before receiving confirmation and the Eucharist. In some cases, this can be difficult due to a large number of years between the Christian’s baptism and reception into the Catholic Church. In such cases, the candidate should confess the mortal sins he can remember by kind and, to the extent possible, indicate how often such sins were committed. As always with the sacrament of reconciliation, the absolution covers any mortal sins that could not be remembered, so long as the recipient intended to repent of all mortal sins. Christians coming into the Church should receive the sacrament of reconciliation before their reception into the Church (there is no established point for when they should do this) to ensure that they are in a state of grace when they are received and confirmed. Their formation in the faith should stress that frequent confession is part of Catholic life: "The celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation with candidates for reception into full communion is to be carried out at a time prior to and distinct from the celebration of the rite of reception. As part of the formation of such candidates, they should be encouraged in the frequent celebration of this sacrament" (NSC 36).
foundsheep
I believe you have to go to confession before you recieve communion at the Easter Vigil.
Thy Geekdom Come
Hmmm...well, all I know is that my theology teachers at seminary taught me what I said... bah! Conception isn't known as being 100% Orthodox anyway...which is why I learned more theology off of Phatmass...I want to be 100% loyal to the magisterium... Mrs. Bro. Adam
Ok...now I'm confused! Who am I supposed to listen to?!
Sojourner
Raphael, I believe that what you said would be true for an unbaptized person who entered the church ... they would have no need for confession because Baptism would remove all sins committed beforehand. In terms of timing, though, I was encouraged to wait until a week or two before confirmation before confessing.
