My Singing Video!

You have some tuning issues that could be due to you trying too hard to be loud; either that or you're trying to hide the tuning issues with volume. Also, you need to work on your diction.

I was trying to sing loud because I wasn't sure how well the camera would hear me. I usually don't sing quite that loud. I sing loud-ish, but not quite that loud. What on earth is diction? Everyone keeps using phrases that I don't know the meaning of.

Did I? My computer froze. :|

 I guess so.

Consider yourself twice complimented. :)

Did you see more than the first video?

Just saw it; the first time I wanted to see it, it wouldn't load.

But you saw the other videos? They are much better than the first.

That's what I said, isn't it? :)

Just making sure. The first video is not as good as the others, so I always make sure people have watched those as well.

Diction is the clarity or pronunciation of your words.

Thank you! Yeah, Michael has been telling me the same. He keeps giving me assignments to do crazy things that make me look like an idiot in public. To help me with diction he wants me to speak slowly with extreme pronunciation on words.

By the way, sorry I haven't replied to your message yet. I will get on it tonight.

Thanks, Miles for FINALLY posting! You have a lot of potential! My suggestion would be to take up some slowish pieces because you have a really nice sound, but it takes time to form on each note. Your longer notes are really nice. Don't overdo the vibrato, this amount is ok, but don't add any more. You were probably nervous when you made the video and didn't breathe enough.... More air and diaphragm use will help your pitch improve. Please keep singing, and keep posting!

Also, not to pick on you because not everyone is brave enough to post this kind of thing, I saw in your second vid how you are breathing. I'm just trying to help. You lift your shoulders a LOT, when in fact they shouldn't move at all. If you work hard on your breathing technique then the rest will improve considerably.
Also listen to yourself as you sing. Plug one ear and you will be able to hear your own voice better. Work on your intonation at a slow tempo. Record yourself and listen to the intonation afterward. Work on small sections at a time. After you can sing the whole thing with the proper intonation THEN go ahead and interpret. Here you are trying to interpret without having given the piece a solid foundation. Try it!

Thank you! Yeah, longer notes are my favorite. I refuse to sing any song that does not have at least a few long notes where I can show off the vibrato and everything. And I was definitely nervous, haha. I was also in a rush because I just wanted to get the video out, so I took imperfect videos when I should have been more patient and tried again.

Thank you! I did not know that.

I'll definitely try this! Thank you! And don't worry about picking on me. You have been the nicest person to critique my singing yet. The critiquing is welcome. As Michael says, I have without a doubt a good voice. But with critiquing, he says, I will have a great voice.

Miles,  nice videos and nice voice. :)

On the diction thing... my mother used to LOVE Frank Sinatra... and I grew up with him in the background.   If you've never listened to any of his music you might want to give it a try.  BECAUSE... if there was one thing he excelled at, it was diction.   He had a reputation that you could understand EVERY WORD, and it is true.  Listen to him and listen to how he does it.  Part of it is being sure to clip off the end of each word so you understand what the full word was.  He pronounces every vowel and every 't'.

Here's a really interesting link discussing Frank's diction...

And here is a good example:

And my mother's favorite album...  you can get a lot of good help just by listening and studying him...  and it is pretty good music too, even if they style is a bit old-fashioned these days... but you could probably pull it off, Miles....
