To Jesus Through Mary
Yeah the nickname thing is pretty normal. Say for example Sr Mary Mother of Truth- we called just Truth. Or Sr Rose of Heaven was Rose. A sister I work with at the parish I am at is Sr. Auxilidora and she is called Sr. Auxi. One of the sisters was Sr. Tabernaculo Divino Amor (Tabernacle of Divine Love) and we tried shortening her name to Tabbie- hahaha she would have none of that. So she is called Tabernaculo. But probably one of the funniest ones is Sr. Servant of the Cross and her nickname is Servant. Which you get used, but when you go out in public you get the strangest looks. OnlySunshine
Can you imagine being named: --Sr. Mary, Gate of Heaven and then being called "Sr. Gate"? --Sr. Hodegetria (Byzantine; "she who shows the way") and being called "Sr. Hode"? --Sr. Mary, Undoer of Knots and being called "Sr. Knots"? --Sr. Mary, House of Gold and then being called "Sr. House"? --Sr. Mary, Seat of Wisdom and then being called "Sr. Seat"? :hehe2:

Antigonos
Sr. Maria Faro di Gioia Known as "Goya"? (not only an artist, but in Hebrew, a female Gentile). :-))

But we called Sr. Mary Seat of Wisdom Sr. Wisdom. She actually teaches the CCD at the parish I help at. There is a Gate of Heaven but it is in Latin. One of the younger sisters put in a request for Sr. Mary Terror of Demons... hahaha no surprise she didn't get it. I love the title of Sr. Mary Refuge of Sinners or Sr. Mary Mother of the Orphans- but always thought the nicknames would sound weird. Sr. Refuge or Sr. Sinner (HA!) or Sr. Orphan (one of the sisters said we could shorten it to Orphie.... which I still thought was weird.)
DiscerningCatholic
Then I'd be what? Sr. Eucharistiae? Sister of the Eucharist? Not bad. :nun:
Sr Mary Catharine OP
It seems sort of odd that the reason the sisters are all given titles of our Lady is to honor her yet everyone has to have nicknames! The sensible thing is to do what we do (of course! :saint2: ) and that is always have some form of Mary as part of the name!
Rosary
Usually the "nicknames" are a shortened version of the whole name. And if the nickname is too weird usually the superiors don't allow it or the sister herself won't allow. Just from my experience in the community. reminiscere
IIt's interesting that in the Latin, the name of the holy icon is the "imago thaumaturga Beatae Virginis Mariae Immaculatae Conceptae in Claro Monte" that is, the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, in the Bright Mountain." In Poland, the shrine is located at Jasna Góra or the Bright Mountain, in the city of Częstochowa. Though in Polish I heard her much more often referred to as Matka Boska Jasnogórska than as Częstochowska by the way. I think the description as Częstochowska or as "Our Lady of Częstochowa" is more of an international description. Visiting the shrine at Jasna Góra was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. The American Częstochowa is also a very holy place. May the Black Madonna always guide you closer to her Son! I think, if I went into that community, I'd have to choose either Sr. Marie Mater Misericordiae or Sr. Marie Czestochowa. If I got the latter, I could be called "Sr. Zesty"! :hehe2:

I found myself thinking "Sr. Mary, Underdoer of knots" and just knowing what the 3rd graders would be calling her: 'Sr. Mary Undies" Makes 'Sister Merry Christmas" seem tame... or that wise Sister, Sr. Mary Seat of Wisdom as 'The Wiz' Not sure about the whole nicknames thing... I know the community I was with we were informed in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that NO nicknames were allowed... this was God's Name For You.... AnneLine
I know... but I also know 3rd graders..... :wedgie: Which was why the community I was with would indeed turn down name requests that they uh... foresaw could cause uh... difficulties. Kateri89
Another one I would love is "Sr. Maria, Estrella del Mar" (Mary, Star of the Sea) :sailing: It would be especially fitting considering the story of Our Lady of Matara.
NatalieisCatholic
Wow, those are all really beautiful names! Are all the names (for the Ssvm) in one language? Or do they vary (with location, or something)? :smile3:
