inperpetuity
I've always loved the Dominican Contemplative Nuns, although I am not called to them, but if I were, I would visit this monastery for sure. They've gone back to the traditional Dominican habit and their beautiful new monastery is coming along slowly but surely. Lots of pictures. :nun2: http://www.lindenopnuns.org/contemplativelife.html Edited November 29, 2012 by inperpetuity
Feankie
Why is it that nuns sound so angelic when they sing?!
Sr Mary Catharine OP
They are a lovely community. Actually 3AM isn't traditional for Dominican Nuns. Usually matins if it is at night is at 12 or 1 or 2 at the latest. But then the nuns go back to bed. O Bread of Life was written by our Sr. Mary Rose Dominic of Jesus, OP who went to her eternal reward 3 years ago. This hymn is a favorite of many Dominican monasteries! We just sang it yesterday! VeniJesuAmorMi
I saw on the website that the recommend these books for young women discerning the call to the contemplative life: 1. "Verbi Sponsa: Instruction on the Contemplative Life and on the Enclosure of Nuns" by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life 2. The Contemplative Life by Thomas Philippe, OP; Crossroad Publishing Co. 1990 3. Walled About With God by Dom Jean Prou, OSB and the Benedictine Nuns of the Solesmes Congregation; Gracewing 2005 Has anyone read them before? Dear VeniJesu, I think I just read in my retreat this week "Walled about with God"; I am not sure because in French the title is different (La clôture des moniales); very very very good book; if this is not the same book I highly recommand to read La clôture des moniales (in English of course :) ); the author is the same (D. Jean Prou), I am sure, and he is extraordoinary!! In fact, thanks to this book and some other elements, I am almost sure to be called to a contemplative and cloistered life: what a beauty! So, read this book as soon as you can! I hope I helped you! :)
inperpetuity
Aww, this is a beautiful community. One of my good friends from college just made her First Vows there this summer. I visited them once, and though it's definitely not for me, it's a lovely place and the sisters are very kind. Speaking of the 3am Matins... when I was there, I tried to follow their entire prayer timetable in order to get a better feel for their life. So I set my alarm for 3am, of course woke up extremely tired, and went to chapel. But, I was so disoriented and half-asleep, that I opened the wrong door - the FIRE EXIT!! Which set off the fire alarm.... waking up my friend who came with me, and I was just glad that the nuns were already up, otherwise I would have felt horrible about waking up the entire monastery.... I'm sure the sisters wondered what that was all about, although none of them said anything (the few times I saw them ) XD

I haven't read them, but if I'm not mistaken, Fr Thomas Philippe, OP is the biological brother of Fr Marie-Dominique Philippe, OP, founder of the Community of St John and brilliant philosopher and theologian. And their brilliant and saintly uncle Thomas Dehau, OP taught them (almost) everything they knew. If I weren't drowning in Marie-Do's books right now (at his community's school) I'd be checking out that one. Any of any of their books that are translated into English should be required spiritual reading.
Sr Mary Catharine OP
We received permission from the translator to reprint Fr. Philippe's books and you can get it HERE and also from amazon as a kindle. It is a wonderful book! Fr. Thomas guided many young women into Dominican monasteries.
