He is my One and Only
I need help explaining something to my sister...I know an explanation, but find it hard to put it into words. When we say "Lord I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the Word and I shall be healed." she (my sister) doesn't understand why we say that. She feels she is "worthy," and by Him dying on the cross for us, makes us "worthy" to him...any advice would be GREAT! Thanks! Pontifex
We are worthy through the Merits of Jesus Christ, but we must also remain humble, acknowleding our brokeness and our unworthiness within ourselves. Not one of us is worthy to approach God without Jesus. "Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed." This particular response is from the Gospel of Matthew 8:8. This is where the centurion pleads with Jesus for healing for his servant. Notice that in verses 10-13 of this chapter that Jesus praises the centurion for this response of faith. I hope this helps your sister understand the Mass. Peace, Fr. Pontifex
