Clapping After Homily

This happened today during Mass, and I for one think it is completely inappropriate during the liturgy. It is way too distracting and takes the focus off of the sacrifice that is about to happen.

The deacon gave his homily, and came down into the pew area and talked to a little girl, and told her a story, and then addressed the rest of us, still standing "across the border," if that makes sense.

I'm not trying to start a huge debate (else I'd have posted in the debate board), but I am wondering what y'all think. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Should clapping ensue after what one may perceive as a particularly good homily, or not?

I just don't think we should be exalting the servant of God, but rather focus on the exaltation of God Himself, which happens on the altar.

If this needs to move to the debate board, I apologize.

I don't know if I put this in the right phorum. I need to study phatmass rules more.

Open Mic? Debate Table? Who knows...

No clapping in Mass. Ever. I've seen the idiots applaud the choir. It's not a performance, you jackasses. I don't like applause for the Veterans, or the married couples who have withered into prunes together, either. No applause. You want applause, go to one of those stupid auditorium non-denominational churches.

You rock. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me (to put it extremely mildly) when people applaud in Mass. I've never before experienced clapping after the homily, but my home parish (when I'm not at school), ALWAYS claps after the choir sings the Recessional song at the end of mass. Sometimes it makes me angry...other times I pray the "forgive them, Lord, they know not what they do," and scurry to the quiet chapel for thanksgiving.

Would it be inappropriate for me to talk to the priest about this, though? I only hesitate because it's not my home parish; I was just visiting.

Also, I have visited this parish before (sometime last year), and in their bulletin, it had an alarming section on "How to receive Communion."

It said in there (not verbatim), but something along the lines of "The proper posture for Communion is to stand. It is not appropriate to kneel for Communion in the United States."

I was very upset to read that, because it is false. I prayed about it, but did not write any letters. Thankfully, when I checked the bulletin today, they had removed that section, and had nothing mentioning how to receive the Sacrament. So maybe just praying about the applause would be the best course of action.

I have a feeling I put this in the wrong phorum.

To quote Fr. Vasily Vasileivich, "IS OUTRAGE!" Yep. That pretty much sums up my thoughts toward the matter.

It might not be welcomed, but oh well.

In the United States I would say that clapping is not appropriate within the liturgy, I would accept that in some cultural parishes there MAY be a place for clapping most commonly during the music. I don't see how after the homily it is appropriate.

I would never applaud a homily and I would feel uncomfortable at a parish where that happened. It isn't a speech and the focus shouldn't be on the priest anyway. At my church the opposite happens: after the homily there is always a short silence before we rise to pray the Creed, to give people time to reflect on what was said.

When people are baptised and confirmed, however, at the end of the Mass (just before the blessing) Father will say, "Let's welcome them," and then we applaud. That has never felt bad to me, although I know others might disagree.

What??? I thought initiation ought to consist of assigning them to some sort of parish volunteer project reserved for such cases.

Unless I'm mistaken, after the recessional wouldn't be terrible. Still wouldn't be something I'd join in or like, but I think the Mass would already be over. Iunno though, there's people here who are much more knowledgeable than I here.
