Eowyn
I think it is a fabulous idea -- perhaps a blogger post as well.... I'd love to recommend it to some of my friends and family who would enjoy it but perhaps not frequent phatmass.
I think it's a great idea and I'm interested. Rosa immaculata
Thank you for posting this! I'm looking for a book with daily meditations for Advent. I found one by TAN books with Sermons by St. Francis de Sales on Advent and Christmas but I'm afraid it will be a little too complicated. I LOVED Mother Mary Francis' book called, "A Right to Be Merry" so I know I'll love her other works.
Ah Mater, I see You are fan of Mother Mary Francis!! I really loved A Right to be merry too, and in fact, I have not finished it yet because I read it slowly on purpose, it is so peautiful and rich that I need time to assimilate and enjoy what she wrote... ; I thnik my next book by this extraordinary author will be Anima Christi and her Poems... and later: Chastity, Obedience and Poverty (I don't remember to goo order of the words, sorry). And now I want to be in Advent, to begin Come, Lord Jesus... Holy Advent!!

Rosa immaculata
Don't worry, I won't bite, even if you hadn't been right, Rosa. I THINK (key word) that is very true about Franciscans. Poor Clare Colettines fast every day except Christmas, though the abstinence from meat is never ordinarily lifted. For Advent, (which begins November 1st for Franciscans) the Poor Clares do not receive visitors (though I am breaking that rule right now) and mail is withheld until Christmas Day. Extensive decorating goes on, which is true for most communities. Here is an article about the Cleveland PCC's Christmas celebrations that nunsense, if I remember correctly, posted on VS a while ago: http://www.cleveland...?mobRedir=false Come Lord Jesus by Mother Francis is great for Advent and anybody who is waiting, which includes all of us, really! Edit: As soon as I posted I remembered that Poor Clares have all sorts of preparations for the weeks immediately before Christmas. There is a lot of build up with different pieces of the manger scene appearing in the choir as Christmas gets closer. When the Infant Jesus figure appears you would think He was there for real from the excitement of the nuns! Also, the novitiate rehearses ballets (not liturgical dances!) for Christmas because, "If anyone should dance at Christmas, contemplatives should!" -Mother Francis. Also, Mother Francis wrote an extensive amount of Advent poetry, which I hear she wrote during retreats, so I assume the PCCs have more retreats during Advent. Mother Francis said that, if you think you are anxious and eager for Christmas to come NOW, just wait until you are experiencing it inside a contemplative Monastery! Since it is the contemplative's job to mold her life, with all its hopes, sorrows, and joys to the liturgical calendar, she said that during Advent the waiting and anticipation becomes part of your very bones. I probably won't ever forget the picture she painted in A Right to Be Merry when she spoke of every nun trembling while singing the Great O's as Christmas approached. (O Key, O King, O...) OP, I think it is wonderful that you want to prepare more fully for the wonder of Christmas! I wish we were all more like you. Christmas is my favorite time of year and least favorite as well.. So many people forget to acknowledge Christ as the source of our joy in this season, but that's Jesus for ya-making others joyful even when they don't realize He is the source! Amazing.
Ave Maria! Sorry Emmaberry, I forgot to reply to you, thank you for your precisions about the Advent: I totally forgot the restriction of visits and letters !! Great but beautiful penance; in a first time I said to myself: it's horrible, but afterwards, I thought how marvellous is the time when you can read the letters in the Joy of Christmas! and the decorations described by Mother Mary Francis are amazing... To live with the liturgy and to live of it: Mother Mary Francis by her book A Right to be Merry made me discover that fabulous reality of religious life (even in apostolic orders...)... and nuns are really really delicate hearts who are moved by joy, beauty and sorrow, with the Church... Pray for me during my retreat (tomorrow until Wednesday)!! I hope (sure rather!! ) your week-end went well at Roswell!
Feankie
Every year I get all my shopping, wrapping, tree up, and cards done before Advent begins. This allows me to really concentrate on the real meaning of Advent. It really is a penitential season and focuses not just on the birth of Christ but looks toward the second coming of Christ and the judgement. As such, it really focuses me on what really matters in my life, what Christ will say about me on judgement day, etc. It's a turning inward for me (kind of like during Lent) to get out the chaff, and replace it with more spiritual things. I have found over the years that fasting during the day with a small meal at night is beneficial (not to mention great when you step on the scale!). It helps clear the mind a well as helping to sweep the cobwebs out of the deepest most secret places of your psyche and soul. Just my thing.... Definitely read all of her stuff if you are able-it is great. If you have not read her booklet The King's Rooms, I encourage you to do so! I just bought an audio cd of her reading it for a Christmas gift (both for myself and friends ). Her poems are great, but I personally like Where Caius Is the very best. Also, if you have not read Candle In Umbria (her short play on Saint Clare), I recommend that. The ending scene is one of the best I have ever read in a script (though I can count on my hands the scripts I have read.) Sorry to go off on that tangent! AnneLine
Mantellata, Thanks for the idea and the link. I've been (and still am) pretty sick this week, so I haven't had much time to think about this... give me a couple of days and I'll give it some more thought. I'm not sure the way I have it set up right now would work for a blog, but I'm willing to think a bit.... let me think & pray, OK? mantellata
AnneLine -- Well thank you for the thought.. my "link" was actually only to help readers follow Christina Therese's blog since when I logged on I noticed the typo.... but the idea credit certainly should go to Christina Therese if it comes to fruition. Please do take care of your self! I sincerely hope you feel better soon. I certainly will be happy with the novena in whatever form it comes out -- I just like to promote a good Catholic thing when I see it.... new evangelization with the new media if you will. Please do not feel pressured though - especially on my account. God love you and all you do!
AnneLine
Thanks... still not quite 100% healthy out here... nasty bug going thru my part of the world! (My husband & I keep 'giving' it to each other.... and to give you some idea of how nasty this thing is... trying to keep from infecting eachother I've been in the guest room for OVER A MONTH!!!! He gets it... then I get it... then it is his turn.... we almost think it's gon and then, hachoo! it's BAAAAACK..... Aren't you glad this kind of virus can't travel on Phatmass??? Regarding the Advent Preparation novena.... I think it might be easier for me to just put it on Phatmass -- if someone wants to put it on a blog, you could link to the Phatmass thread.... Just so there aren't any surprises about what it will be, I'm the Formation Director in a Secular Order community, and this is something we do in the Novitiate/Temporary professed group. It's a custom in my Order (and in many others!) that a little statue of the Baby Jesus moves among the commuity members each day during Advent, and each sister or brother gets the 'host' day as a day of recolletion. Our novitiate adapted that so each one of us would get a chance to 'host' Jesus each day as he traveled through cyberspace... and we would all pray for that person in a special way. I think the easiest way to adapt this for Phatmass would be to arbitrarily do it by first initial of Phatmass avatar names... Dec 7 A - C Dec 8 D - F Dec 9 G- I Dec 10 J - L Dec 11 M - O Dec 12 P - R Dec 13 S - U Dec 14 V - Z Dec 15 dUSt & the Moderators (I think it would be appropriate to pray for them as a thank you for being our hosts!) Would that work for all of you? Each day you could expect to find.... * A different 'baby Jesus' image to enjoy * Some kind of a link to a spiritual video to help us prepare for Christmas/make ..... our Advent more prayerful. * A video link that was more for fun (because that is part of Advent, too!). * A little virtue-type habit to practice * Some kind of prayer activity. (This year I'm thinking about using a decade or so of 'scriptural rosary' type quotes each day for the prayer activity, but choosing the quotes for the verses from St. John of the Cross' Romances -- his beautiful poems about the Incarnation.... Even if someone doesn't like the scriptural rosary, there would still be some beautiful poetry to enjoy and use for your prayer...) Can I get a sense of whether this would be interesting and or helpful to you all? I'll already have it ready for my seculars, and I'd be happy to share this with Phatmass if you think people would like it..... Thanks for the feedback, Phamily!
