Annie12
Okay so it is my understanding that meat is not to be eaten on Fridays unless another sacrifice is substituted in. Is this correct? I only found this out a few months ago. So, why do people not know about this?

Nihil Obstat
As I understand it, we are bound personally, but not under pain of sin, to fast on Fridays. Abstaining from meat is the 'default', but it is the prerogative of the national episcopal conference to allow other penances to be substituted, which most have. Although there has been talk lately in the US of removing the allowance for other penances, and going back to abstaining from meat, like the bishops of England and Wales did. Nihil Obstat
YES.
I think it is an excellent idea. I was meaning to write to the President of the CCCB, Archbishop Smith of Edmonton, and my own bishop, Frederick Henry, to ask if there is any intention of broaching the subject for Canada. PhuturePriest
Father John Trigilio said that we are supposed to abstain from meat on Fridays. However, he said that if we are unable to because we are traveling or something (Like I was today) we can substitute it with another sacrifice. He said you don't particularly have to give up something, but you can take something up as well. For instance, you can try to be nicer to people that annoy you or something like that. I think its the result of having all my religion classes taught by people who grew up with V-2, not to mention my parents. Of course, now that I am trying to observe this I forget half the time!!
Well that's good. Since I forgot today, and at least the past 3 Friday's. In the diocese of Steubenville, the last bishop had done the same thing as they did in England and Wales (I think). However, since he's left the diocese, it's been largely forgotten.

So, what you're saying is that if someone forgot to abstain from meat-- just completely slipped his mind while he was chomping down on a meatball sub or eating Thanksgiving leftovers-- that was a venial sin?
