One of my favourites: Caravaggio's Beheading of John the Baptist. I have been fortunate enough to see it in reality.

The most beautiful work of art in my most humble opinion:

Anything by Mark Rothko, but I recently discovered the environmental abstracts of Lampo Leong. Anyone who fancies contemplative yet beautiful pieces should check those two out (but especially Mark Rothko)

:D

My two favorite of Rothko's, No. 61 and Red and Black:

And a few of Lampo Leong's:

And no list would be complete without someone from the Hudson River School, especially Asher Brown Durand:

Maybe I am just a Phillistine, but I do not really get the point of coloured blocks on canvas. :P I mean, I do not dislike it or anything. Just does not really do anything for me.

"Mocking of Christ"

I'm sure many did not realize that the famous painting of St. Dominic was part of a larger work of art :)

The knots in Mary's hands symbolize the problems that we create for ourselves; she is unknotting the cord; helping us fix our lives.

I love the one angel to the left; he's all like, "Yo, dawg! I mean...c'mon! Ya see dis mess? Dis all yo' fault, ya know. Can't you give the lady a break?"
