Let's Talk Benedictines?

How come PMers don't talk about Benedictines much? I see a lot on Franciscans, Carmelites, and Dominicans, but rarely ever hear someone mention Benedictines. Is there an explanation for this, or is it just due to PM "demographics"?

Their are quite a few Benedictines. We come and go, but some of us have entered or are entering. It is true that it does seem to be quite a few Dominicans, Carmelite, and Franciscan hopefuls here.

Don't you just love Saint Benedict?

I really don't know much about Saint Benedict or Saint Scholastica. God said "Benedictines" one night, and I just did as He said. I'd never considered them before. But now, it does indeed seem a good fit. Am awaiting the semester break so I can read up on the saints.

Yes :) I realised today that he has been working his way into my life very swiftly over the course of about three years. My university back home is affiliated with St. Benedict. The college I am at now is as well, and is home to a Benedictine monastery. I have a St. Benedict card and medal, both acquired by chance. Yesterday one of the Sisters here told me that she sensed in me a connection with the Benedictine way of life. I wonder what he is trying to tell me, if anything.

Also, something kind of cool: an Australian documentary on five women who spend three weeks in a Benedictine abbey. I've checked out a few videos and it sounds really interesting. Here's the link if you'd like it: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/theabbey/

I am SOOOOO glad you posted that link! Fascinating!!! Look here, too: http://newcovenantjournal.blogspot.com/2011/08/monastery.html

And here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monastery_(TV_series)

There have been several such shows! (If this is not news to anyone, please forgive me, as I don't watch tv.) We should totally try to find all those episodes online and post them in VS!

I am not drawn to Benedictine spirituality or their charism of hospitality. However, I think orders like the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles and other fully habited orders are beautiful. My friend is a 1st year novice in an active/contemplative Benedictine nursing order in England. ;)

EmilyAnn! Get yo' butt in here!

I'm here!

I think it's a demographic thing. Because Carmelite communities tend to be smaller, there are more of them whereas Benedictines tend to have larger communities so there are fewer. Plus I think St. Therese got a lot of women into Carmel (not that that is bad).

Benedictines are amesome. Have you tried reading the Rule?

I love the B's too!

Back in the day I discerned with them for about a year and came close to applying for entry.
I love the radical simplicity and the slightly different Vows and how the charism of hospitality is lived out. They introduced me to the chant and I will love them forever for that......

Wonderful!

I really do love the Benedictines of Mary. Their Priory is very beautiful, and everything smells like incense. I also love how the chapel is centered in the priory. It feels like God is the center of their whole lives there.

@ emilyann

I have tried reading the rule again. this time with thoughts from Joan Chittister. She is very insightful in the rule and I have gotten a lot more out of the readings though it had taken me almost three times as long to get through it!

There's me too. I am back from St. Mary's and currently staying with an aunt and uncle/ My fault it didn't work out. I will be visiting Holy Cross in Chicago in early December for a few days. If things work out I will probably enter there in early January. In the meantime I live as a hermit and try to find some volunteer work I can do. There is a retreat center in town that i offered my services to and they might get me to redo their website. all my worldly possessions fit in two suitcases and a carry on bag. I have asked God for one last chance to test my vocation and it seems that God has granted that. So we will see what happens.
