sorry, haven't been following the news lately so I don't know what's going on.
Quick synopsis.
Israel exists after being created by outside nations and there is conflict with how Palistinians are treated.
Hamas has gained political power in the PLA (Palistinian Authority) in the mid 2000's.
As you probably know, Hamas denies the right of Israel to exist and has been involved in terroist/military attacks agains Israel and that complicates any settlement between Israel and Palistinians.

Fast foward to this month:
Israel bombed a military leader of Hamas.
Hamas started shooting rockets into Isreal.
Israel has started shooting/bombing back.
Egypt(Russia) is getting interested.
Syria(Iran) is getting interested.

Expect WAR before 2013.

What do you mean "expect war"? War is already going on. I assure you Obama's phone hand is twitching to make the call and send the troops there.
I'm sure the only Obama "twitching" is his smirk because this didn't happen before Nov. 6th. It's an escalation of an on going conflict now, it'll be WAR when troops and tanks start crossing borders and other countries start taking sides. There is little political gain for American politicians if war in Israel starts because it's going to likely lead to a confronttion with Iran/Russia and dealing with Iran seeking nuke capability and more Arabs/Muslims getting even more butt hurt.

I don't really see this ending well with the whole Russia thing. They hate us enough already. One little thing could set them off.

I thought that Israel took out the Hamas leader in response to an increase in rockets from Gaza.
Not exactly. The motivation for assisnating Jabari seems to include retalition for recent attacks, response to increased military capabilities of hamas, political purposes, and retribution for Jabari's involvement in past terrorist attacks and kidnappings. The following is from Saudi Arabia's "Arab News"

Israel’s intelligence agency Shin Bet said Jabari was responsible for Hamas’ takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, when the group ousted fighters of the Fatah movement of its great rival, the Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
It said Jabari instigated the attack that led to the capture of Israeli corporal Gilad Shalit in a kidnap raid from Gaza in 2006. Jabari was also the man who handed Shalit over to Israel in a prisoner exchange five years after his capture.
Israel holds a general election on Jan. 22 and conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under pressure to respond firmly against Hamas, with residents of southern Israel complaining bitterly about repeated missile strikes
Some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis died in the 2008-2009 conflict. There was a lull in hostilities after that, but the violence has flared again in recent months and Israel has repeatedly warned of dire consequences unless Hamas and its fellow fighters stopped rocket attacks.
In the latest confrontation, which appeared to have ended on Tuesday, more than 115 missiles were fired into southern Israel from Gaza and Israeli planes launched numerous strikes. Seven Palestinians, three of them gunmen, were killed. Eight Israeli civilians were hurt by rocket fire and four soldiers wounded by an anti-tank missile.
Helped by Iran and the flourishing contraband trade through tunnels from Egypt, Gaza militias have smuggled in better weapons since the war of 2008-09, including longer-range Grad rockets and anti-tank missiles of the type they fired last week at an IDF patrol vehicle.
Yeah, you and millions of others.

It's hard to imagine how a win-win scenario could come about or even exist. Other countries (mostly Britan who occupied the area) forced the creation of Israel after the Holocaust because they'd been persecuted AND it was a convenient way to get Jews out of their countries. Palistinians were screwed and maltreated by these other Countries and now have to deal with Jews who they consider as occupiers. The Israelis have often crossed the line in their treatment of Palistinians because of often justified fear, as well as purely selfish reasons. There is plenty of blame for inflicting intentional harm for all parties and we now have this never ending fued constantly fueled by retaltiation and aggression by Israelis, Palistinians, Arabs, and their allies who have their own alliances with these factions.

In addition to the realities of political and sociological conflicts, throw in the theological conflicts of Islam and the Jewish faiths. They'll be killing each other until one side is obliterated and forgotten by their allies.

I have a friend who lives outside Tel Aviv who spent the night in the basement of his apartment building. Sounded a bit like the London Blitz.

Ash Wednesday

I've been following it.

But at the same time, I don't know if you guys remember that old "doodie" website -- crowded in the toilet humor corner of the internet...one of the animations just had an Israeli and a Palestinian crapping back and forth on an area of land, and it was a looping animation that had no end.

So... yeah. I can't help but think of that when I read the news.

This is the first war in Israel since I became a Catholic, and I have to say: I'm kinda' shocked there's been no word on it from the Church (aside from the Jerusalem patriarch). Am I just missing the talk, or has the Church really said nothing? I don't expect that the Church will have something to say about absolutely every event I care about, just because I care about it, but war in the Holy Land...? You'd really think she'd have something to say.

Can anyone explain this to me?
