Struck Me As Odd

I just looked at a bulletin at our parish for the first time. On the back of it are "church sponsors". Probably about 50 local businesses that buy ad space from the church. Coming from a Baptist and Lutheran backround maybe you could help me understand it, becuase to me it just seems wrong...

i donno... i mean churches do need to pay off their debts for their building and stuff sometimes...

maybe the businesses are all places where parishiners work?

even if not, so long as they're not promoting a business that does evil, it can't be that bad i guess.

Ours, usually just makes enough to pay for the Bulliten. Most of them are businesses owned by parishiners. At least it lets you know where to buy catholic. Come to think of it Some of the businesses even donate to our Knights Breakfast and Stvincent Depaul stuff.

Rebirth flame

ditto foundsheep. the Church doesn't profit off of the sponsoring thing. Just enough to pay for the bulletin at our Parish too. Most of the businesses on ours are also, as foundsheep said, owned/operated by parishoners. its just a way to be able to provide a bulletin without having to pay an arm and a leg for it.

printing, paper and ink add up if you want to make at least enough bullentins for every member to get one. anything goes to nobody else but the parish where needed.

our light bill monthly is skyrocket high at our parish (Our church is really big, it was modeled after the cathedral) *sigh* so we have to pay that if we want light

but i thnik its neat ahving the businesses support their parish, the parish needs it.

Thy Geekdom Come

They're businesses that help to support your parish financially and, in return, their businesses are listed. I think it's a nice acknowledgement and it helps their businesses as well, giving them the "Church-friendly" image and making parishioners buy from them rather than those who use their money for bad causes.

Another thing that bothers me is they do two collections within 1 hour (during mass) and don't announce that another collection is for anything other than just a general collection. The more I talk to people the more it seems that many Catholic Churches are struggling financially. I have to wonder why.

anyone can ask for alist of hte bills and how much money, etc. is going and stuff.

also keep in mind that the parish is also liable to pay the diocese as well...

as for the collection thing, it should be announce, but i know everyone here at my parish for example, knows when its the certain time of the month comes around, its unannounce but everyone knows its the St. Vincent de Paul collection (which is money for poor parishoners, and struggling families of our community, they can ask for help and the church helps them with food, medical bills and money as well cuz thats what the money is used for) anything else gets announced

theres always different collection, cuz theirs different causes within the parish.

I've seen my parish's bulletin and has a whole back page filled with local businesses, and spots that say "place ad here". It looks like just another way to help the church.
