Whats With Some Black People

Funny thing I noticed while watching 'Colonial House' on PBS. The two black people who were on there both said that after their experience, they came to resent the name 'African American'. They both said they preferred "American of African descent".

It made me think that 'African American' something that Society (B & W) uses as a mis-fitting label. Personally, since a lot of my family are recent immigrants from various races/ethnicities/nationalities, we refer to ourselves as 1st, 2nd, or whatever generation American, meaning if we were born here or not. Our parents/grandparents, etc., all consider themselves American when we got to turn our green card in and became Citizens wether we were from Europe, Asia, or the Middle East, etc.

A black friend of mine used to make fun of this phenomenon all the time... whenever we'd go to a restaraunt he'd pick names for his 400 children off the menu...

"Tabasco, Primavera, Shacrisquo..."

Hehe, yes. ;) But I've noticed that some of the unusual (to us) names that are popular in America are making their way over here.

Anyway, I dunno, it must be a cultural thing in some parts of America because all the black people I know have very ordinary names: Andrea, Michelle, Francis, David...
