It's just a cultural thing I'd guess. Every culture has names that are unique to them.

For example, I know a Greek girl named Olympia. I would think that's a name that you'd really only find among Greek people.

Jewish people have names like Moshe and Shmuel. You'd really never hear those names outside the Jewish community.

These names may seem weird to us, but they're not weird in the culture that they are used in.

They are brothers and sisters in Christ, just like everyone, no matter who you are, you were made in the image and likeness of God.

Different cultures, different names. Down here on the border, germanic names are common. I know several Gilberts, a Filbert, a Humbert, a couple Hilda's, and a Helga.

We should strive to overcome cultural differences by reaching out and trying to understand. Often this will not be reciprocated, but we have a mandate from the Holy Father. :)

God bless.
Why do white people call black people African Americans?
lol...I've been yelled at for both! My (white) Latin teacher scolded me for saying black instead of African American and a black guy said, "I'm as American as you, so call me black, not African..."

I'm not racial, some of my best friends are black!

yeah yeah Mr. Duke.

Now I'm not being racist...BUT...(what follows is something pretty racist; it never fails)

Seriously, I believe it's a cultural phenomenon. Yeah, that's a nice blanket judgement.

My friend's mom is a teacher.. she's had two kids named Lasagna in her classes-- one female, the other male.

There was also the girl named Michelle who pronounced it "Mee-shell-lay"

haha... reminds me of our Homecoming skit this year..

Announcer: "And now, the Homecoming Queen for 2004.. VASELINE?!!"
Vaseline: "That's Vaseliiiiiiiiiinnneeeeeeee!"

* Ellenita bravely re-enters thread.... :thumb: .......

.......Thinks, the Americans are being exceptionally friendly after my last post.... *

Cultural differences in names are also influenced by the times in which the child was born.....personally I think those darn hippies have alot to answer for.....

:hippie:

Didn't Zowie Bowie change his name as soon as he was legally able to do so?
