Well, I don't mind jeans that have a slimmer cut as long as they aren't tight. No emo boys wearing stuff they pilfered from the girls junior department. A taller guy can sometimes carry off the slimmer cut. Just depends on body type. The overall composition of the outfit, however, is solid. Nice button down, appropriate sweater, clean cut jeans, excellent shoes, and good accessories. This will catch a girl's eye. It would tell me that a guy had put some general thought into his appearance.

They are black and don't have strings on them. They are specially made restaurant shoes because I work. These are not them, but they are very similar:

It's not overdone, it's simple clothing that looks well put together. And, when you get the chance, buy a good pair of leather shoes, not work shoes. Save up for them. A good pair of shoes will go with any outfit.
My brother wears skinny jeans that show a lot of his underwear. I think the last good shirt I bought was about $55.
