Voting

The election last week got me to thinking (full disclosure, not happy with the result) - do sisters and nuns vote? What about driver's licences - if you enter and need to renew your license, can you? Tennessee has a voter ID law and I wondered if the Nashville Dominicans ensured that everyone has a license so they can vote.

From my own personal experience, they do vote, they do have drivers licenses usually in their given name not their religious name. However that can vary state to state. We in the novitiate who were of ae to vote were taken to the polls with the entire community at the Provincial Center in Toledo.

The american community that I entered did just that -- you could register to vote and vote when the elections came around. At the time, a picture ID was not required. I was a postulant so I did not have my driver's license in the state I was in community in, but if I had become a novice they went through the necessary hassles to get the driver's license transferred to the state.

I don't think the Roswell Poor Clares all have drivers licenses, due to the simple fact that they would need to be renewed every couple years.. However, I know they vote, and I am unsure what alternate form of ID they would present to vote (I think they vote by mail/absentee ballot), so they could have driver's licenses.

Good question!

I am/was discerning with Carmelites. I know that some vote by mailing in the absentee ballots, but the ones I was discerning with actually go out to vote. The Visitation Sisters I have been in contact with also go out to vote.

The Carmelites in Australia went out to vote, but the ones in the UK sent in absentee ballots. I think it depends on the community as to how they handle this but everyone is encouraged to vote.

I wondered this when I went to vote 2 weeks ago. I think, since I'll have to go to Europe for postulancy and novitiate formation (God-willing), I'll have to cast my vote using an absentee ballot. :)

I was in the UK when the US election was getting under way (after the primaries) and I went online and registered as an absentee ballot because I thought I would be in England at the time (originally I thought I would be in the US at Shaw Island!). Then I came back to Australia early and was glad I had registered absentee, so I sent off my ballot via email (Washington State allows this and I am still registered there) - you lose the anonymity but it is quick and I got a reply right away. Then I had to mail in my vote as well to confirm the email vote... so I did this. It was all very painless. I imagine that in future elections, I will vote absentee from Carmel as well.

How does the community vote? Meaning just for the president..or ALL running canidates in different positions? If yes...are the sisters given the reading material in order to make a informed choice? I too was thinking about this same topic the other day. NUNSENSE- may I inquire as to if you are from my state? (Washington) if you answer, please feel free to pm me. If not...no worries
BTW- my state celebrated it's 123rd Birthday yesterday.

I think it would depend on where they live. When I vote absentee, I only vote for the Federal election - that is President, Vice President, Senator. My brother who lives in Singapore also votes on the State and local issues because he returns to the States a lot (he works for a US company overseas) and he keeps informed of the state and local issues. I wouldn't feel right voting for these as I am not living there.

The nuns in England would no doubt vote on all their local as well as federal elections and the US nuns would probably do the same there.

I was living in Washington State for a few months when I was discerning with the Bendictines nuns at Shaw Island, but I am originally from California, but I was last registered in Washington to vote. If I go back via CA I will change back to a CA license and voter reg.

Didn't read everything, so sorry if this is redundant. My sister is a Nashville Dominican. She kept her MN driver's license until it needed to be renewed, at which time she got a TN license. She has had 1 st profession, so Idk if it would be different if her license needed renewing before then. But, this year she voted in TN. Previously, she had voted absentee in MN. I would think most of the Sisters there maintain a driver's license, since they teach all over and go to school away from the Motherhouse. If they do not have a license for some reason, I would guess that they would have a state issued ID. They take seriously the responsibility of voting. When my sister was voting absentee, she was allowed to go online and look up all the candidates and the referendums, so she could be an informed voter.

Sisters likely vote, Nuns may not. I know Carthusian Monks (Whom are completely cloistered) are allowed to go out and vote on election day. They are given newspapers and everything in the months prior to the election to educate them on their vote, and on voting day they go to the voting booths. I can't imagine all cloistered communities do this, though.
