1 - I am going to a STATE SCHOOL (school is $6000/year), by no means an Ivy League -- I moved to go here, the University of MN (state school) was 17k!!!
2 - My degree is in SPEECH PATHOLOGY not liberal arts -- starting salary is at LEAST 45k, even more if you go into a medical setting (which I do plan on)
3 - I will be getting a PhD eventually, in biological neuroscience

Really, the small investment the government (tax payers) is making in ME will yield great returns down the road. I see where you are going, but this is no way applies to me.

I am not one of those 'kids' (btw I am almost 25) who is getting a degree that will go nowhere, my field is growing exponentially. Has been and will be for years to come.

Unfortunately you may be misinformed about the opportunities in Speech Language Pathology.

I remember when I was going to go to school for Library Science, I chose it because there is supposedly a huge shortage of librarians coming down the pike. It was an imaginary shortage. I believe the professional associations still claim that there is one or will be one shortly. Not likely. This is particularly the case when there are economic pressures on school districts. The SLP career path is also very dependent on school districts.

Keep in mind that there are paraprofessionals, SLPAs, which are cheaper to hire than an SLP. Many places can hire several SLPAs and then just 1 SLP to do the stuff an SLPA can't. Are you prepared to move somewhere under-served? You will probably be able to find a job more easily in very rural school districts. This would require your other half leaving his job however and that may not be a good change. Union jobs are harder and harder to find.

Do you know any unemployed, new grad BSN RN's? I know a lot. Most places don't want new grads. There's a huge shortage of nurses but many new RNs I know are working as CNA's and still applying.

Similarly you'd be surprised the number of unemployed PhD's there are.

I sincerely wish you well. And it's good that you've done "well" under the Obama administration. But I wouldn't trumpet so loudly that you decided to vote for him, BECAUSE it would help you get very very rich. That is a VERY shallow reason to vote for someone. And honestly it does come off selfish. Especially to someone like me, who had to take loans to go through school, and work FULL TIME because I didn't qualify for a Pell grant. What makes you more deserving of help than me? Are you super special? How exactly did you "earn" the "right" to have me pay for your Pell grant? Where do you send your thank you note every year for someone else paying for your schooling? Because if I were you, I WOULD BE SENDING A THANK YOU NOTE and not wallowing in self-adulation about how I "deserved it" because I "worked hard." harder than who?

Not harder than me, the taxpayer.

Nope.

I dont need to assume anything about you to state that unless you live in a mormon compound, you know at least one person who voted for Obama.

Ok so somehow Bush has no blame for presiding over the economy completely imploding, yet Obama gets all the blame for it not recovering fast enough for you? You dont need to be republican or liberal to figure that one out, it just takes a small portion of brain cells and a little electricity to put that together.

Obama can get all the blame he wants for the current economy and how it has changed since he took office, but that doesnt change the fact that Bush gets the blame for it breaking down in the first place.s if he had a "D" beside his name instead of an "R" you would be railing on him too, and we all know it.

and even then, she is halfway wrong. You are looking at one of the few canadians who doesnt like Obama. Doesnt mean I dont prefer him a bit to Romney, but I really dont like Obama for countless reasons.
You just act as if you don't know that the senate and congress were in the majority of the democrats since 2007. That's when all our trouble started from the bad policies and governing that went out of hands, which created all the trouble in this country in the first place.

As for Bush having a "D" instead of an "R" I would only hate the bad politics and not the person himself.

Yes, because $45,000 is rich. Very, very rich. LOL go tell my parents that. As an SLP, with YEARS of experience, and hard work, you can make a very good salary. But keep in mind, you have to have at least a Master's minimum (in most states) and have to do a certain number of continuing education hours per year.

I voted for him because I am now able to pursue my dream career and go to college.

I, the taxpayer, pay taxes too. Essentially I am paying for my own Pell Grant. And SLPa's aren't licensed or qualified to do half of the things SLPs do.

I was just saying, in argument to other posts, that I am not getting Pell Grants to go to school to be an art major. Or what-have-you. I AM GRATEFUL for the opportunity. For years I wasn't able to go back because I flat out COULD NOT AFFORD IT.

I am pretty confident I will have no trouble finding a job, post-grad. I've researched this field enough and what my professors are saying they are even contracting out for SLPs they need them so bad. And with the geriatric population rising and ASD being diagnosed more and more, I am not afraid of my job prospects.

Plus, as stated above, I plan on going into a medical setting. I do not wish to work in a school.

PS if you didn't read -- I am not JUST getting Pell Grants. The amount I get is small compared to most other recipients. I also have Stafford loans, and YES they are loans, but they are the only ones I can get and I am GRATEFUL that they voted to keep the interest rate lower and not cut funding to Pell.

Sheesh!

Oh yeah forgot that no one reads:

I AM A TAX PAYER. HAVE BEEN FOR OVER 10 YEARS! so.....thanks zabba.

And you know what...if Suzie Q from Any City, USA wanted to use a Pell Grant and other federal aid to pursue a career helping people, I'd be OK as the taxpayer with my taxes going to that.

Oh yes, it's all Bush's fault that we're in such a bad economy (sarcasm anyone?). Please continue to blame Bush and completely ignore the fact that Obama has done nothing to help except get us into more debt. I'm so happy America chose him for a second term. So, let us see what we get out of it.

I'm done with this thread.

Blaming Bush for contributing to the economic disaster that has transpired is just reality. Is it solely his fault? No, of course not, just like it's not solely Obama's fault, or solely Clinton's fault. This catastrophie was decades in the making, much like the levees down in New Orleans prior to Katrina. Was it only the fault of the mayor in office at the time that those levees didn't hold? No...it was the fault of the dozens of mayors, governors, senators, PRESIDENTS and other officials who were told time and time again that there was going to be a problem, and yet did nothing.

I love it.

So "if" someone goes to school to pursue a career "helping people" they should get free money. BONANZA!

What special committee gets to decide which careers "help" people? Just for the sciences? Art doesn't help anybody after all. Sorry to all the Michelangelo's out there.

I'm sorry UPS was too hard on your back. Did you try Starbucks? Or is brewing coffee "too hard" on your back too.
I work my booty off, I deserve my Pell Grants and my federal aid!
Doesn't sound too grateful. Again I'm waiting for your explanation of why you are extra special and "deserving" of free money from people like me who do "too hard" things like work full time and save money for expensive things they want to do. Like school.

I apologize if I am coming off mean. I just hate to see attitudes like yours.

Basically you admit in public that you purposefully voted to get yourself more money. In order to enrich yourself, personally. Do you not see how that is pretty disgusting?

Hey there, so quick to judge, I receive this aid because I don't make much (not by my own choice)

And my back is in a huge "S"...a LOT of things are "too hard" on my back. I NEVER SAID WORKING WAS "TOO HARD"! I WORK FOR PETE'S SAKE! Ironically enough, part of my job is being a barista.

I have worked full time for years, so don't act I'm some freaking leech who chooses to do little to receive "free" money. I worked and continue to work very hard, I do feel like in the event that I DO qualify for federal aid, that I deserve it.

And yes, I voted for my candidate because he wants to keep Pell as it is and NOT shrink it. And yes I am enriching myself, MY EDUCATION, to eventually go on to serve others and pay it forward.

And by saying getting a degree to "help people" -- if anyone wants to further their education and get their degree and they qualify for federal aid like myself, take the opportunity.

You are acting like I quit working all together just so I could live off the government.

Never received welfare, Medicare/Medicaid, food stamps, so if this little bit of help is available to me I am going to take it. I would be working for decades before I could pay for all of my schooling, from 0 to Master's, with cash. Mom and Dad can't help.

PS - My Pell Grant this year is under $1000. Soooo....wahhhh. I paid more than that in taxes last year.

So, approaching your vote with an evaluation based predominantly on rational self-interest and economic matters is "disgusting?"

I happen to think that voting to make the Pope happy is pretty disgusting too. And I have a sneaking suspicion that some of our Founders would have agreed with me.

Pardon me if I don't wanna work 3 jobs for 10-15 years to get my degree. I had to wait until I was 24 to resume schooling as it is.

Maggie is right, it's even hard for a RN to find a job, they do not higher new grads even though nurses are needed. Vote for Obama to get rich? Ha! Aint gonna happen.

oh my goodness (don't blasphemy) PEOPLE I NEVER SAID I WAS GOING TO GET RICH! Starting salary with a MASTER'S is $45,000

This is why Obama needs to get to work on improving education. Obviously people cannot read. Or spell properly. (Businesses generally don't higher people, they HIRE them).

If you wanna crab about people getting rich with minimal to NO effort, take a look at your LOSER presidential wannabe, MITT ROMNEY.

Zabba, I have an honest question for you. It sounds aggressive, but I do not mean it that way.
What person or persons owe you an education?
