AnneLine
Nunsense, I think what you are looking for are often called 'fishermen's sandals' -- look at these: http://www.amazon.co...f=pd_sbs_shoe_4 http://www.amazon.co...n sandals women http://www.amazon.co...n sandals women http://www.amazon.co...n sandals women And if money is an issue... .Dr. Scholl's are pretty comfortable usually, and well made.... AccountDeleted
I like the look of the Hush Puppies and they are comfortable too. I do like Dr Scholls but they didn't have them in brown, which is what I would like. Thank you all for going to so much trouble to look for sandals for me! My next problem is that the sizes are all different from country to country so I have to be super careful when ordering online. I bought a pair in England and thought I had the right size, but when they came they were too big for me. I returned them and got a refund (they didn't have them in the next smaller size) and then ordered a different pair online. The size was ok for these ones, but they weren't comfortable when I put them on. It's really hard to buy footwear online I think. What I will try to do is to find a brand I like online and then find a local shoe store that carries that brand and model, and try them on for size and comfort! But the Hush Puppies look best so far to me - they have a nice rubber sole which is great on the wood floors because it is quiet! http://www.zappos.com/hush-puppies-angya-dark-brown-suede-nubuck I'd rather not have the white piping but it is a very small amount. The Alegria looks nice too - but a pretty hefty price. http://www.amazon.com/Alegria-Womens-Fisherman-Sandal-Fancy/dp/B0077SM43O/ref=sr_1_50?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1351932329&sr=1-50&keywords=fisherman+sandals+women And the tread is very low too, which can get slippery when wet. I sound critical of all of them I know - but it is just that when I spend a lot of money, I want to get exactly what I want. And it would just be so much easier if I could and try them on!! Thank you everyone so much for all those ideas. I will get a pair before I head back because my shoes are nearly treadless now and they are starting to get slippery when it's wet. I tend to wear my shoes out before I get a new pair.
NonNovi
If someone is looking for simple leather sandals in Europe, they sell these at the Benedictine abbey of Le Barroux (France): Model Scholastica Model Hildegard They are handmade by another abbey, wich makes them a little bit expensive... But the quality is good, I know some priests and sisters who wear them and they are very positive about the sandals.
